Thinking about buying this as first mh

Hey guys new to the forum. Been thinking about a class a diesel pusher for a little while. My wife and I are younger early 30s. But we don't work traditional jobs anymore and have lots of time. I've been thinking that full timing in the winter might be a nice option for us as we live in Ohio and it's cold here. So I'm thinking I want a 38 or 40 foot dp. I want one with full paint and room to accommodate 4 people though most of the time it'll prob be just her and I. I found this one and its relatively close but the guy describes it as rough. It was used as a limo so probably partied in. Guy says fridge won't power on and chassis has some rust on it. Price looks good and I am very handy. Plus I'm a landlord and have 2 full time handyman I could put on this to fix up. Is this too much of a headache or should I go for it?

Really I think my budget is in the 30s. But I can go up on it. Really what I want to do is get one I can dump next year and not get murdered if I decide this isn't for us.

I plan to take it to Florida to an RV park on or near the ocean and just hang out there for a few months a year

  • Shaftslinger, it's what you can't see that is important. The guy is asking $45,000? It needs $30,000 worth of repairs at least (in my opinion).

Personally, I like things in tip-top shape. You have cabinet doors missing, water damage on the bathroom cabinet doors. Missing closet doors, missing valances, a non working fridge, etc. Also a missing exterior ladder.

Just think what the chassis might need? I bet there are no maintenance records and the unit has 87,000+ miles.

If you could get it for $10,000, maybe, and I hope that you are chassis savvy.

At the age of the coach and if maintenance cannot be verified, I would change all belts, hoses, fluids will need to be changed along with an air dryer service and chassis air bag replacement. Even if they look good (check dates), you don't want a bag failure on the road.

I'm also wondering if the chassis was lubed all those years too.

The generator will need the same attention.

There is so much to consider with that coach.

    Good luck,
    MM.
  • Welcome to the forum.
Walk away from this deal and keep looking.
  • If a dealer is calling it rough then it must be really, really,,,,really rough!
  • Welcome to the Forum...I'll be blunt.
If you think you will be full timing in this unit, I think you will find yourself staying a lot with friends in their houses or in hotels.

Doing research like you are doing is a good idea, but don't get caught up with the unrealistic, "romantic" notion about what RV'ing really is or what it entails.

This unit might be a good project coach for someone with lots of handy skills, but not for a first timer planning on living in it.

    Anyway, good luck.
  • Well....the pictures do not look too bad.
BUT....when a dealer shows 'Good' on the dealership web site and 'Rough' on RVTrader, it would seem the dealer just wants it gone! So you gotta ask yourself 'Why'? The dealer has the facilities and staff to maintain & repair rigs to get the best prices.

If it is not too far away, it might be worth a look. (Travel Supreme are usually good rigs.) But based on the 'AS IS' I would check, fill, drain, start, use, operate EVERYTHING! (I just realized - Of course, in Ohio it would need to be winterized if not kept inside! Most snowbirds do not need to winterize!! :B)

I have a pretty good and extensive check-list for a DP - send me a PM with your email address if you would like a copy. (The PM service does not provide for big attachments.)
