ths guy again?

I thought of something else Id like to ask....insurance...I talked to my insurance agent and told her Id be starting out with just liability insurance on the motorhome(been out of work for a few months with eye problems and moneys a little tight) but the more I think about it Im afraid Id better go with full coverage afterall....whats your thoughts about this?...Id hate to hit a tree backing into a site and crush one side of my camper....I will have to check with her and make sure I can afford it but thats my thoughts at present....Id love to hear what others think....
  • Insurance is about risk and protecting yourself. If money is tight as you describe I would spring for full coverage. Without insurance, anything that happens could end your camping season completely.
  • Be sure to shop around for company that sells RV insurance, not just adding on like a car on existing policy. I had insurance for autos with a company with a lot of A's in their name. Shopped and found Progressive with better coverage and half the price (about $500/year). MHs have very high MSRP compared to actual price paid. Old company would only insure for MSRP. We paid $35,000 less than that, but they would not come down on value. Progressive allowed me to specify a value that we agreed on for coverage, thus saving a bunch of money for coverage limits that I did not need.
  • I always take the full coverage, Plus Total purchase Price refund if RV is totaled for any reason. Ed
  • +2 on increasing the deductible. Also, my homeowners covers the RVs contents so might be cheaper for full coverage if both are the same company.

+1 on increasing deductible. I am surprised at how many people have only $250, or less!, deductible... Bump it to $500, or even $1,000 and the yearly cost can plummet.
  • These days, in my opinion, insurance is meant to cover the really BIG things (and to satisfy a lender) because, if you use it, it will come back to bite you. So... as Trackrig said, full coverage with high deductibles is the way we roll.

how old is your rv? are you a full timer? part time?

full coverage for an rv will probably we anywhere from $700 on up depending on what your coverage is.

Depends on the unit and location...Our 2013 coach is only $500/year for full coverage.
  • You could insure it, but with a higher deductible to save money. That way you pay for the small things and they pay for the large ones.
