Towing capacity

Hello, I plan to flat tow my 08 Wrangler 2door with a 96 ITASCA 34RQ with a Ford 460. Has anyone done this and what should I expect. I'm a little concerned of straining the engine. I have a roadmaster blackhawk 2 rated at 10K and an even brake proportional braking system. The MH hitch is stock so I don't know what it is rated at. I guess I'm just wondering if I'm in the right ballpark or am I asking for too much of my MH.
  • I towed a Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Unlimited for several thousand miles with a Tioga 29H Class C on a Ford E350 chassis with the 460 engine. I had a well-qualified local welder reinforce the 3500 lb. capacity hitch. In several trips over the Continental Divide, the old (1995) Tioga performed flawlessly.
I have no idea about the numbers, never weighed the Tioga or the Jeep. It worked, that was good enough for me.
  • Thanks for the replies. I will look for those numbers this evening. I did weight the coach last year fully loaded it was right at 16K. Is the GCVW the total weight on the axles? If I'm flat towing would that mean I'm not putting any additional weight on the axles? If the most I can haul in or out of the MH is17K, what's the point of adding a hitch? I mean I know others are pulling vehicles with these old Gasser's.
  • the capacity of the hitch/receiver should be stamped on it. since that is the old ford chassis, might be limited to 3,500 lbs.? you can probably find a spec sheet for that motorhome on the web.
did they add a tag axle on a 34 footer back then?
how much was the frame extended?

  • It's not the engine you should worry about....it's the tranny that will fail.

On the drivers side, usually behind the driver's seat, on the wall, should be a stick on placard. This placard gives you all kinds of information.

    On this placard will be:
    GVWR, Gross Vehicle Weight Rating
    GAWR/Frt, Gross Axle Weight Rating-Front
    Gwar/Rear, Gross Axle Weight Rating-Rear
It may also contain the GCVWR, Gross COMBINED Vehicle Weight Rating.

It's the last one you're interested in. This is the weight of your fully loaded coach PLUS the weight of your fully loaded tow vehicle. Look closely at your hitch. Usually there is a sticker telling you the load capacity. Your vintage coach should either have a 3500# or 5000# hitch. It will not have a 10,000# hitch. Weigh your coach, weight the Jeep, get the numbers off your placard and then we can give you a better answer. With what you've provided, all anyone can do is guess.....Dennis

The 34RQ GVWR is 17,000# with the Ford engine.

  • What is the weight of your MH? What is the GVWR for your MH? What is it rated to tow? What is the GCWR? What does the Jeep weigh? Once you know all that you will be able to answer your question.
