Travel to Yellowstone

We will be taking a trip to Yellowstone in Wyoming...we have never beed there so Im hoping we can get some advice on where to stay and travel routes. We have a 37' diesel pusher towing a jeep and will be coming up through Salt Lake City. Whats the best route, do we travel over a mountain pass, winding roads? Prefer to stay in a park or resort with 50amp service and full hookups.

Thanks.......

Dave
  • Someone posted a thread about road closures in Yellowstone on Sept. 2 - might want to check that out before going.
  • When we go to Yellowstone...been there three times....love it. I head up the I15 spend the night in Cedar City at KOA.

The next day we head north until we get to highway 89 north of Salt Lake City. Hang a right at highway 89 and overnight in Logan, UT.

Next day we leave Logan and head towards Bear Lake and into the Tetons, spend a couple of nights at Colter Bay RV Resort.

Head out from there into the south entrance of Yellowstone through the park into West Yellowstone and the Grizzly RV Park..

We have also stayed in the park at Fishing Bridge and Madison, Enjoyed Grizzly the best. Blog has pictures and route if you are interested.
  • Another vote for the Bar J dinner and show in Jackson. The dinner was very good and the show was amazing!
  • Just came back this week. What a wonderful place and we had a fantastic time. Grizzly is indeed the closest "resort" park to the west gate. We, however, stayed at West Yellowstone KOA. A lovely park that I highly recommend. Trees, indoor heated pool, coffee shop, restaurant, cable TV, and wifi (weak wifi but available). Really a nice place with level sites. We had a premium site with concrete patio, wooden bench swing, concrete round table and benches (really new and nice) grass, and very easy access. If you get down to Jackson don't miss the Bar J Western Show and Dinner. As it happens, we needed emergency RV service on the dash air, Big Sky RV and Rentals were fantastic. We also rented a 15 passenger van from Big Sky, as we were traveling in a group. Wonderful people. We stayed in the West Yellowstone area 6 night, even with some rain every day we could have easily stayed longer and had lots to do if time permitted. We came up the I-15 to the 20. There is about 5 miles of major road construction on the 20, concrete dividers, and no shoulder steep drop off, all along the 5 mile stretch. Big rigs did it, we did it...but I was not happy!!!
Alternate route: We came home going through Jackson Wy, on the 26 to Idaho Falls. This was a good road, no construction, it will take you from Jackson through Yellowstone to West Yellowstone. The drive will probably take more time, but there is no construction (to speak of...as there is always some construction) and the scenery is spectacular.
    Happy Trails.
  • Also on the east side of Yellowstone is Cody WY. Neat town with great Buffalo Bill Museum. The drive from East Yellowstone to Cody passes by Buffalo Bill Reservoir and dam. We stayed at Yellowstone Valley Inn RV Park between east Yellowstone and Cody, or there are RV parks in Cody if you want to travel that far in your coach.
  • Of coarse that little grade from Salt Lake to Evanston will give you some idea what WY is like. (WY is indian word for high desert plains). That is what is encountered east out of Evanston. Evanston has a 62 day growing season. I would take 189 north out of Evanston. Evanston has a little park and info about area. If I recall exit 5. Free dump station. Pretty much up hill to Jackson Hole. I like the Tetons better than Yellowstone.

Soon as you know your dates, make a reservation at Yellowstone Grizzly RV Park in West Yellowstone MT. Sooner the better - they are a very popular place.

Head north from SLC on I-15/I-84, stay on I-15 into Idaho, then US-20 at Idaho Falls straight to West Yellowstone. Easy drive. Expect construction. There's always construction.:)

X2 Excellent advice. Be sure to take a day trip south to see the Tetons, well worth the time. Also a day trip up to Silver Gate and Cooke City then to the top of the world via the Beartooth Hwy, just don't take your coach.
