Tropical Storm Florence 2018

Just a heads up for any interests along the North Carolina/SouthCarolina border at the coastline. Tropical Storm Florence is beginning to strengthen and build in intensity. Forecast landfall is for somewhere along the NC/SC coastline on Friday, 9/14/2018. Of course, the exact track will remain uncertain for the next few days, but most of the models are lining up for the storm to become a Category 4 before making landfall. This may well be one of the strongest storms to impact the East Coast in many years. If you are planning a trip this week, or are already there, make your plans to get out before the mass evacuations begin! Stay safe everyone!!
  • I posted 24 hours ago. Went to get gas for lawn mower last night and they were lined up at the local gas station. TV showed grocery store shelves picked bare in this area. Pretty grim. I got to go to Durham tonight so hope I can get gas myself.

Florence is going to stall over the Carolinas and dumb 4’ of rain. Besides the major damage near the coast, flooding is going to be wide spread and well inland. Areas that have not had flooding will flood. RVs have wheels under them and you need to get west to TN or south to southern GA or even northern Fla...now before the rush.
  • And here I sit in NC but 100mi from the coast and on a hill. DP is at my place up in MD so won't worry about it. Guess I'll get some gas for the generator today just in case.....
  • I wish there was something I could do but I am down in Florida and would have to take my chances driving right through the areas that Florence might hit. He has made it to Hawaii and is awaiting his 8+ hour flight out of there direct to Atlanta and then back to Maryland. Fortunately Olivia has dropped in intensity so he should have no problem getting out of Hawaii and will make it to Atlanta sometime tomorrow morning. After changing flights he is due to get in to Wash-Reagan at about 10:30 tomorrow morning. A 1 1/2 hour drive south and he should be able to get home in time to do something. Our 32 year old grandson and grandson-in-law both live and work at PAX river also so they are helping to take care of things until our son gets home. I'll wait down here with my three portable generators to see if anything is needed after the storm passes.
I appreciate the prayers but it looks like everything is working out fine. Growing up on the coast of Florida has given us all a respect for hurricanes and what we have to do as far as preparation. Like us, he has insurance on the 5th wheel so it is a minor concern. If things look bad when he gets home, he will saddle up and leave the area completely.
The people in the NC, SC, and VA areas look like they are going to get the brunt of Florence. I wish them all well.

I just got an email from my Son who is on government business in Guam. He booked a flight that is just now leaving Guam, ahead of Typhoon Mangkhut which is supposed to hit there later today(it is already Monday in Guam). 7 hours later he lands in Hawaii where the connecting flight will get him out of there just before Hurricane Olivia hits Hawaii tomorrow. Changing flights in Atlanta he will eventually get back to PAX River in Maryland on Tuesday in time to batten down the hatches on his house and try to figure out what to do with his 5th wheel. I don't know if the coast of Maryland will get hit hard by Hurricane Florence but he won't have much time to prepare for anything. Three different storms in three days/locations is a record for my family. :B

Wow, that ain't good. Is there anything YOU can do, since you're closer? I'll pray for y'all.

I hope he makes it home on time. I wouldn't want to depend on the airline industry to keep me ahead of hurricanes. :E

Beware that if it becomes a major rainmaker there will be flooding far into the mountains.

Very good point. Not in the mountains, but there were several small towns in SC that we all but wiped off the map during the last Hurricane that came through here. Devastated the state parks along the coast, but also caused major flooding inland.

Those that choose to stay near the coast with all the advanced warning might should not call 911 if they get into trouble during the storm. They won’t come.
