Unmounted spare tire question

I would like to carry a unmounted spare tire. I don't have any outside storage compartments large enough and I don't want it taking up space under the bed inside. But I have plenty of space behind the rear axle on the underside. No problem making a way to suspend it. My question is how to keep water and dirt out of the unmounted tire? A friend said to check in to having it shrink wrapped and another said to put a inner tube in the tire and inflate just enough to fill the cavity. Any other idea's out there? And no I don't want it on the roof.

I have one and always have. The problem is the one time I had a non-repairable flat it took till the next day for them to locate a replacement tire.

And sometimes pay through the nose for a mismatch. I have a mounted spare and if needed, it's to get me to a tire shop and maybe buy two new that match. For instance my fronts are not that far away from being replaced anyway.
One might use the tube idea, as well as the tire wrap for an unmounted spare down under and sounds like a good idea.

Instead of worrying about keeping it clean, go ahead and mount it on a rim. I have several large trailers that I carry a mounted spare using a come along to raise and lower the tire. Buy one like this and mount the snatch block to the frame and put a T on the end of the cable. The T needs ears on it that go in the lug holes to keep it centered in the rim so it raises level. Fasten the handle near the rear and while it's not real fast, it will raise and lower the mounted tire. I would put a piece of inner tube on so you can put it around the handle end to keep it clean.
The unmounted tire I carry on the roof needs to be redone as the plastic wrap has deteriorated. Instead of using alum foil I'm going to use some leftover drywall tape and better plastic wrap this time.
  • Why not mount it and include it in the tire rotation mix. Refer to www.michilinrvtires.com, tire guide, page 9, rotation.
  • wrap it in a blue or silver tarp the kind found in discount stores like harbor freight, ollies, flea markets etc. buy large enough for 2 wraps put a strap each way around it. and put it up under the frame that's what I have done.
