Upgrading 30 amps to 50 amps?

I've just bought a 2007 Fleetwood Terra LX 31M that has 30 amp service, with dual a/c. I may never use both a/c units, but what is involved in upgrading the system to 50 amp so it doesn't have to cycle/share? My Googling the question has had zero result.
  • Hi,

Weekend Warrior used to have it's dealers install a 50 amp upgrade in the parking lot of the dealership in about 4 hours. It is really simple.

They would pick a basement storage compartment, and put the panel in there, along with a new 30' power cord, and 50 amp main. 30 amp to feed the factory power cord, and a couple of 20 amp circuit breakers to feed various other circuits. I think they fed both of the air conditioners, and a dedicated circuit to the air compressor in the garage area of the toyhaulers.

You can pick up all the stuff at Home Depot. The cord end is the same one as a 50 amp stove plug.

You will need a 125 amp panel with about 10 circuits in it, or more if you want it. A 50 amp main breaker, 3-4 each 20 amp breakers, and a 30 amp to feed the factory cord (that you can cut off back to about 6' to reach the new panel location.)

I would put a stove receptacle on the end of the factory cord (that you cut off) to make a long 30 to 50 amp adapter, for use in campgrounds that only have 30 amp services, or while using the 30 to 15 amp adapter, like in a friend's home.

Write back if you want any additional information.

    Fred.

The ac units do load-share on the rig we bought.

So it is a load sharing device not a load shedding device? Meaning, will the device allow both units to run at the same time or only alternate them?
  • your gonna have to upgrade your circuit breaker panel.

Last summer i build my own 75 foot extension cord - SO (jacketed) 6/3, 8/1 (conductor/strands) with the terminal plug ends it cost me about $450 bucks.
  • Hmmm. I though fleetwood put an EMS in those. Same as the Southwind. Assuming your fridge and water heater on gas both AC's should come on although the EMS will delay the start up on the second unit until the first unit is up and running.

Check to see if it has a full up EMS with load shedding. Maybe it wasn't offered on your unit.
  • New power cord. New panel and some extensive rewiring of the panel to split the power.
