Used MH discounts

I tried doing a search and it came up blank.

Is there a website to get a ballpark idea what used motorhomes are selling for? My buddy's brother just retired and is looking at new and used gassers. The dealers will take BIG discounts of the sticker prices on the new units. He's looking also looking at a used 2004 Itasca. I can find the same unit for sale at a few dealers online. They are both asking 44K. I told him if he likes it and everything checks out, throw them a decent offer. All they can do is accept it or turn him down. He has cash.

Thanks in advance for your help!

  • NADA will give you ballpark price, IF, a big IF, the MH is only a few years old.

Older units are way undervalued by NADA, i.e., they sell for a lot more than NADA.

ex. 1990 Bluebird Wanderlodge. NADA about $12,000. Real World, $35-55,000.
  • Being on consignment changes some things. If the dealer is truly selling it on consignment the selling price is set by the MH owner. Yes, the dealer has some input on the selling price, but if the owner has set a bottom price limit then he probably doesn't have much room to deal. Besides he is probably only getting a % of the selling price as payment for selling the coach. That is probably why he wasn't ready to slap on a new set of tires when he was told the originals were 11.5 years old. If the owner said no then the dealer would eat up his commission just replacing the tires.

Depending on what you are looking at, I would simply do a google search for that year, make and model for sale. Call each and what their best price is. Most will get you pretty close. NADA is a guide at best. You never know what the owner/dealer has in it.
  • All good info. I'm thinking if he can get it for 10% or so off of the consignment price thats probably fair for all. Its on consignment at a car dealership and they know absolutely nothing about motorhomes. They didn't like it when i showed them that the tires are 11.5 years old and need replaced even though the tread is like new. I will check out the PPL listings tomorrow.

    Thanks everyone!!!!
  • Ebay advanced search will provide winning bid prices.
  • PPL is the only place we know of that gives the actual prices of units sold. NADA prices are computed from an industry-agreed depreciation rate.

It's probably better, in general to deal with dealers than owners -- in our experience buying used, owners had unrealistic expectations of value, whereas dealers were more willing to work with a discount from NADA values. That's not to say, however, that you might not get lucky with an original owner!

Good luck to your buddy's brother,

NADA has prices on Motor Homes. They are not really based on real world prices but most people I've talked to say to use about 20% below the low retail price. I've done this and it worked for me. Another site is PPL motor homes. They are mostly a consignment dealer but they have a listing of all the motor homes they have sold and for how much. Bottom line is that they are worth what someone is willing to pay. Lots of other stuff to think about and I'm sure you will see it all here before too long. Good luck.

I've just gone through this. I would be shocked if you could get a decent coach at 20% below low retail as stated on the NADA site. That would be a dealers wholesale price. Now, getting 20-30% off a dealers asking price is doable.
  • Go to PPL Motorhomes site and click on the SOLD listings. They sell tons of rigs every year and you can get a pretty good idea of pricing. They are a consignment dealer in Houston..Currently they have almost 5,000 SOLD rigs listed.....Dennis

  • Phoenix Auction can give a good indicator. Your correct make an offer. You can always increase your offer but kind of tough to came down.
