For some time now I have been using a metal elbow to hook up my water hose (for ease of connection). I like them very much. The problem I have is that they only last a short time, then they start leak...

Use a decent quality rubber washer and change it yearly instead of those plastic looking jobs that come with so much of that kind of stuff now. If you are out of hose washers and have a leaker sometime you can buy a little time by turning the washer over.
