V10 oil consumption

I made an appointment with the dealer for an oil change on my Monaco 29' B+, and told him I have used over 2 Quarts of oil (Mobil-1) in 5K miles. I was told that was not unusual. I was also told I should change my oil every 3K miles. Neither of these statements make sense to me. I think the last vehicle I had that used oil was in the 60's. Is the dealer right? Your thoughts please.

  • In 140,000 miles I never had to add oil to my V10. Changed it every 3,000 miles.
  • My 2002 V10 had 110,000 when I sold it. I bought it used & used Ford 5W-20. I had it changed every 4,000 miles & it was down less than half a quart. I have a 2008 V10 that I bought new & same oil & change interval. It now has 45,000 miles & can hardly see change at 4,000 miles. JMHO but I would change from using Mobile 1.
  • have you had this scene new ?
if not what kind of oil did you use before?
try a different brand of oil( it worth a shot)
maybe that motor doesn't like mobile 1
some time when you go from none syn to syn you will use oil
most oil is the same but it all the additive they put in it make it different
  • When I bought my '85 new the fleet manager said I'd get about 7 miles per gallon of fuel and 1 quart of oil per thousand miles with my 460. I think the oil is a consumable because it is not in a totally sealed system. I think some leaks into the top of the cylinders and down the valve guides, etc. You can't close it off completely, otherwise you wouldn't be adequately lubricating the seams.
