"Big Rig Friendly"... Route 7 is "The" north/south route in Vermont. It a good ride, well maintained, very interesting and passes right through my hometown of Middlebury. Well actually, Bristol is my hometown and it's not on Rt. 7, but close enough to Middlebury (lived there too). Be sure to slow down and take in the true flavor of Vermont and the Champlain Valley. You could easily spend a week traveling that road and still not see it all.
  • I just noticed where you're from and probably haven't been in that area before. Here's some of the places I'd stop at: Proctor Marble exhibit, Town of Brandon, Town of Middlebury, Basin Harbor and Lake Champlain Maritime Museum (Vergennes), Mt. Philo State Park in Charlotte (this one is a must, bring a picnic lunch and drive your toad up there, an outstanding view of the whole Champlain valley), Shelburne Museum (you'll easily spend a couple days there) and this is just a sample of things along Rt. 7. If your there at "Fair" season VT has some of the best Country fairs, Rutland, Addison Farm Days and The Champlain Valley Exposition in Essex.

While in the area you might want to check out Ft. Ticonderoga, NY, Ausable Chasm, NY and Islands of Chaplain VT (I lived in Isle Lamott too)
  • If you are going to be there the first half of July, look for my rig somewhere. We are staying the 4th in Pownal, then to Essex Junction, Then to Arlington. We've been there before and loved it. It's a good break from the Georgia(in your case Texas) July heat.
  • i work for a trucking company and Hwy 7 is closed to truck traffic from the center of the state to the New york line. So it they wont allow truck traffic , i expect it to be tough road depending on size of your rig
  • backhoemike: I hate to be a "Naysayer", but I live here and Rt. 7 is the only north/south route in western VT, so it's doubtful they would restrict truck traffic. But then, Vermont does march to a different drummer, so anything is possible. However, I've been up and down that road hundreds of times with my 35' travel trailer and it is a very good, modern highway. He'd have no problems using it and what's the alternative? I87 in NY state and miss Vermont, I91 in the eastern Vermont and miss the Champlain Valley or were you thinking Rt. 100 straight up threw the Green Mountains. Either way you go, they all have some great scenery and lots of interesting things to see and do along the way. I'd do Rt. 7.
  • I took my "new to us" 2011 Tiffin to Ft Ticonderoga from the albany area a few weeks ago. I trusted my GPS when it told me to get off 87 onto rte 8. Yikes, what a scary road that and rte 9n is at night in a new RV! Twists and turns, ups and downs. It might have been nice suring the day though.

vermont & Rte 7 does not restrict truck traffic. They do ask that trucks do not use their jake brakes in towns though.
  • OK here I am from Rutland Vermont. There is no problem driving route 7 from Bennington to Burlington. It is interesting. You may be surprised that this road is our north/south highway. We camp in the Burlington area. North Beach camping area is owned by the city of Burlington. Get a 50 amp site near the front line if you can. You will be close to everything. It's one of our favorites and the least expensive camp sites. You're only yards from the best beach on Lake Champlain. Please private message me if you need any particulars.
Have Fun Thanks for visiting our state.
