I marvel at those that can FT in a small RV. Even as half timers it's a good thing we have a tag axle for all the stuff we carry. Granted some of it is spare parts and extra tools as I still do all my own repairs. Do I really need an extra alternator BUT for less than $100 rebuilt why not? With improved cell service do I still need that 20 ton jack and the tools to put my spare tire on?

My point is I do not have the mind set to get rid of all of my stuff and rely on others. I still enjoy developing property and running my equipment. The other hold up is all of our kids and grand kids still live in the same town... no need to travel to see them.

For us three months as snowbirds and hopefully 2-3 month traveling out West works the best at this time for us PLUS it would take something like this to carry all of our stuff if we were FT.

  • Never having to load and unload the motorhome for a trip.

Always knowing that what you want is either with you or you don't have it - i.e. did we bring that with us or leave it at the house?
  • I bookmark any blogs I come across written by Fulltimers. This has helped me learn about the lifestyle. As you read posts here, you'll notice that some include their web addresses in their signature/post. They provide great info.

Remember, people who have abandoned fulltiming, aren't necessarily here (on the forum). So you can get a bit of a lopsided view if relying on the perspective of others.

We're "part-timers". I've enjoyed it enough to look at fulltiming but have no plans to do so. Our S+B is low cost and will be our "rock". We always enjoy being on the road but at the same time are always glad to get "home".

  • we like it

but pros and cons. No takes or expenses in keeping a stick house. But no stick house to keep your stuff

Moving regularly and exploring all the great places we visit is what makes it wonderful. Make life an adventurer at your pace. What would you prefer to do play golf every day?:S
  • Best advice is by "Yogi".
When you come to a fork in the road....take it
  • This post should be moved to the "Full-time" forum on this site.

Success in full-timing for 16 years:

    - join and become active in the Escapees RV Club

    - not sitting in one spot more than two weeks, unless you're doing a volunteer gig or workamping. You'll get stagnant. :)

    - drive the secondary roads, not interstates

    - try different ways of RVing - RV parks, public parks, county and city parks, boondocking in awesome spots on Federal lands

    - get in the mindset that things will not always be perfect. Take it a day at a time.

    - volunteer in our wonderful public parks. You will be a great asset to the money-poor parks. It gives you purpose and is fun!

    - If married, both parties have to willingly agree to full-timing otherwise it won't work. Needing to be close to the kids and having stuff they can't part with are big drawbacks.

    - Go into it by saying "we're going to full-time", not by saying "we're going to 'try' full-timing". The first is a commitment.

    - No need for an 'exit' plan. Sell the house and invest. Then if you find that ideal spot you'll be ready.
