What satelite system to purchase?

We have decided to replace our 2006 King-Dome satelite since it is outdated. Looking for opinions on what everyone thinks is the best way to go. We will be using the DISH on the GO service since we are not full timers. We have 2 TVs in the coach. We know we have to purchase 2 receivers, just not sure which satelite to go with.
  • Trying to find the best dish for us and running into issues. We want to continue to take our DISH receiver (DVR-controlling 2 TVs) with us, and have an automatic satellite instead of fussing with reception with our current dish. Found out today the new Tailgater won't work with our DVR, and the Winguard we are looking at says it only locks onto one satellite at a time, so if you are using two TVs, they have to be on the same satellite.
Is this really going to be a practical issue, or am I worrying over nothing? Any suggestions??
  • The new Dish TV "Tailgater" is out and the least expensive on the market for an auto satellite. I have DirecTV and will probably switch for this. HD too.
  • Thank you for the replys so far. We are not needing in motion. We do not have Direct TV or DISH in our home, so our only option is the DISH on the Road so we only have to pay when we are using the coach. Our camping is done mostly at race tracks and in the mountains since we like to go 4 wheeling, so the tree situation probably is not much of a problem.
We are replacing the TVs also, so that is another project. :-)

You don't necessarily need two receivers. Dish has dual output receivers that feed two TVs. One of the outputs is HD, one is SD. The Winegard Trav'ler is an excellent automatic dish. It is an open face, three LNB dish that receives satellites 110, 119 and 129.

Second that. We have 2 tv's and one receiver and run it through a splitter. Works fine. I hid the receiver in the cabinet and use an IR remote repeater and receiver located at each tv. Have Direct TV on ours. For 4.95/month for the receiver (added to our home account) no need to start/stop service when we go on a whim.

We have the winguard in motion mounted on ours. Pros: it's easy and when has line of sight works great with excellent reception. There is no easier set up. We live in MD and most of the NE highways have a lot of tress and cover. Heading west on the other side of PA things open up and it works great while driving. It does give you Sat TV while driving down the road that no other option will. (the kids dig it) Cons, in route it will drop at every underpass and wooded highways. (nothing you can get around while driving no matter what you have), and as the previous poster noted you are stuck with it's location if under tree cover. I will say that in the 4 trips we've taken in the past 2 months I have been only able to use it at a CG once because of tree cover at our sites. I got over it but if it's important something to consider.

All in all I like it but I do find myself wishing for an alternative with tree cover mainly because I am paying for something I can't use. There is always antenna backup but that's sketchy too and very limited. DVD's or sitting around talking is something to consider too.

So, portable and possibly a work around with tree cover when parked but no in motion and a manual set up to find a working spot, or in motion, no set up, and risk tree cover at the CG.
  • How often do you set up at a campsite where your dome is obstructed and cannot "see" the satellites? I find that few CG's we stay at have open views to the satellites and ended up getting a VuCube 2000. This or other similar carry-out dishes, provide many more options for receivig a signal in a treed CG. Just one man's opinion!!!
  • I have the KVH R6 with DISH HD...it works just fine but you can only see one sat at a time...so if you are watching 119, then your rear will only get 119...kind of a pain. but it works...and really how often except late evening do we have it on....

I have been hearing that the Winegard Traveler has been superb and can see more than one sat at a time... great unit..but not dropping the bucks on something when I have something that works...

I'd go with the Winegard Traveler.
  • You can go with Dish Network or Direct TV.
If you are near Canada and will be traveling in Canada Bell Express Vu.

If you just want very basic "free channels" you can get FTA satellite.

If you have a wifi card for a laptop you can always stream Netflix.
