What to compare in Class Cs

We are just starting to look at Class Cs. We are on our 4th travel trailer. Floorplan is always most important, but then I would compare cargo capacities and tank sizes. What is important to compare in a class C? Do I want levelers? Any brands you love? My parents are looking at the Mercedes chassis. How do those compare? I have two teens so I may need a little more space and storage. Thank you for any input.
  • Since you are tairler wise, for a c you need to apply the same basic thoughts as for the trailer. The floor plan you want, although many limit you to similar fp's. Storage for most c's is an issue as they do not generally have a lot. some of the longer ones may but the main 24-28's are pretty limited. Our B+ winnebago has decent but not a whole lot. mainly some drawers under the sink, a couple slide out under the dinette be overhead storage in rear along with 3 small closets, a small pantry area and a similar size in the bath room. The over head beds in conventional c's offer extra space but they also add to some problems and may offer some issues with fuel mileage due to being a square brick up front. So yes they are something to really look at. Some outside storage bays are pretty small, some offer a large trunk area but they are behind the rear axle and they may also cause some issues just like overloading the rear of a trailer. We looked at quite a few before our purchase and all exhibited some issues relating to storage. Wife liked a jayco with the bunk beds in a slide at rear, dont know if still available or not. Also she liked the melbourne from a few years ago. I did too for the cab area (elec seats etc) So basically its a search to find what you think will be adequate for your needs.
  • Thanks for the responses. We originally were looking at a smaller class A. However, after watching some videos, I hear that a C has better safety features, is easier to drive and easier to have maintenance done. I do like the cab and better storage on an A though.
  • Pick one that will suit your needs and a floor plan that you can live with.

My recommendations or suggestions would be try to get one on a Chevy Chassis They will give you a better ride and more room among other perks.

The Mercedes as stated already costs a lot more and their service may be hard to come by in many parts of the country.

The Chevy or Ford have a larger network of dealers and service centers.

As for levelers that is a personal preference, they do add some weight to the chassis and with a larger RV that extra 150 to 200 lbs may be handy for more cargo,I've done quite well without them for the last 26 years.
  • do a search here on problems with Class C overhead compartments. construction would be my number 1 factor in my purchase. an excellent floor plan is useless when the overhead falls/rots apart.

  • You certainly have focused on two of my “must haves” and they being tank size and storage space (both inside and out) especially if you plan to boondock or stay at campgrounds that are not full hook up. In answer to the levelers, after owning several motorhomes, I will never consider one without levelers. The fully automatics can be nice, but ones you do manually (push buttons) work well to.

I have looked at the Mercedes and have heard good things about them. Keep in mind they do get mush better fuel mileage, but maintenance costs and fuel costs are typically more than a gasser.

Before you commit to a C, take a look at some smaller class A’s. Newmar makes some very nice short Class A in the 27-29 foot range, with good storage, and because of their size are easy to maneuver.
