Your choice but not recommended by the manufacturer. You should look at the test done by Consumer Reports several years ago comparing NY City taxis with oil changed every 3k miles to those changed every 7.5k miles. My daily driver is an SUV with diesel engine - oil change every 10-12k mile. Wife's is gas with the same oil change frequency (both determined by the onboard computer system). The diesel oil/maintenance cost is higher - and factor in the ridiculous cost of diesel!!
My Cat engine oil change frequency is dictated by hours and duty. For light duty it works out to about 23,000 miles or every year. I can not imagine an OTR engine on a 3-7,000 mile oil change frequency.
Also, comparing NY Taxis that are in constant traffic to a MH that cruises the hwys is a bit much.......no relevance.
So, for me it's once a year regardless and that come to $300.00 at a dealer.
You miss the point - many recommend oil changes for gasoline engines at 3000 mile intervals. Consumer Reports simply blue printed a number of engines in taxis (I think all would agree severe service conditions) and compared the 3000 mile and 7500 mile oil change intervals for engine wear - no difference. As mentioned - I change the oil in my wife's car every 10-14k miles as the onboard computer recommends. - tropical36Explorer

Documented? Probably not. Why even bother changing it at all? Most folks only keep their RV a few years or less than 20K miles anyway. Just drive it and change it just before you trade.
Wouldn't go that far and especially with the kind of run we made this summer touring the country, but would bet my money that you'd get away with it. In fact, I remember a guy who said he did just that with never changing the oil and I believe he was driving a Ford Torino at the time.
As for the coach we have now, we bought it with 46K miles in 07 and now have approx. 86K. It's never skipped a beat, knock on wood and except for making a trip like I just described, I change the oil once a year, whether is needs it or not. - Big_KatunaExplorer IIDocumented? Probably not. I firmly believe that changing the oil every 3K miles is a complete waste of our energy resources and one of the reasons prices are so high for a barrel of oil. Just MHO of course, but then read any very critical owners manual that just loves having you come into one of their dealerships for any reason and see if any of them recommend that kind of frequency.
To each their own. I agree 3000 miles in cars is a carryover from leaded fuel days and a marketing gimmick from the oil change folks. I use the maintenance computer for our Hondas and change around 35% which s usually around 7-8K miles.
When I had gas coaches, I changed at 3-4k as I consider that extreme use eg going up steep hills at wide open throttle at near peak operating temps, extreme duty. It wasn't so much the cost I minded as itt was an extra PITA while on vacation.
I believe Workshorse recommended every 3000 miles. I might be wrong.
And most likely always recommended using a certified Workhorse dealer for this purpose. GM made the engine and might have said different, although they like a lot of traffic at their dealerships as well. I ran ours close to 5K miles this summer before changing it on the road, but then again, we'd been over and up and down the rockies, pulling a toad that is actually a bit heavy for the coach and in extreme heat at for the most part. The desert southwest and sections of CA were murder for the heat this year and unlike we'd seen before. Still, it takes a lot to break down today's oils in today's engines. I mean, when has there ever been a documented case of engine failure because the oil's properties were gone?
As for changing oil while on the road, I carry an enclosed drain tank that I keep on a shelf rack I built behind the gas tank, so all I need is a good place to change it out and then carry the used oil all the way back home if necessary. This way, I at least know it's indeed been changed and has been done properly. I never install the filter that's called for either and use one that has more capacity. - Big_KatunaExplorer II

It cost me $85.00 to change the oil on my diesel pusher. Just saying.;)
I tried changing mine once myself. Had to factor in the cost of a new shirt, new pants, and a bag of kitty litter into the total cost.
Like I stated I was just saying as we have a large farm shop so changing oil is not a big deal, plus my work clothes are usually not to tidy also! But when I work on my motor home I take a change of clothes to the shop as my wife won't be happy with me driving the coach with my shop clothes! Also the C7 Cat only hold a little more than 5 gallons of oil and the filter from Cat is $15.50.;)
But if you are going to compare doing the work yourself, it would probably cost you under $25 to change the oil yourself on a gasser ($5 filter and $20 of oil - actually probably even cheaper ...).
It's also easier to do it on a gasser (e.g. I don't think I have a large enough pan to hold all the oil from my DP but the one I have would be enough for my old gasser). I also do not have 10k lbs axle stands to support the rear of my DP but I do have 3k lbs axle stands that are plenty for the front on my old gasser. Obviously all that can be easily changed but it's more to point out that equipment most people might have in their garage might be sufficient to do some work on a gasser is likely not sufficient to work on a DP. It's also quite a bit easier to reach to oil drain on the gasser.
