Who Has Purchased A New MH Out Of State ?

We have purchased new motorhomes in two surrounding states. It was not a hassle at all with the exception that when we bought one in Texas they wanted to make darn sure we were not "Texans" trying to avoid tax and required our Oklahoma authorities to send them all kinds of documentation for the Texas authorities. We also bought a new RV in Arkansas and it was no hassle at all. I guess Arkies are just more trusting than Texians :)

Texas has no income tax so they are really serious about collecting vehicle taxes, apparently. We sold a motorhome thru PPL in Houston and we had to go through a lot of steps we certainly would not have had to do if we had sold it here at home. I think it is because they just don't trust us Okies because we have beaten and embarrased them so many times in football over the years:D

Our current motorhome was purchased from an individual who lived five miles down the road and was less than one year old. It was registered with a tag issued by one of the Oklahoma Indian tribes. The State of Okahoma treats them just like they are an out of state purchase. Our tag agency was required to physically inspect the vehicle to verify the VIN number and I was required to return the Indian tag to the seller once I got my official state tag.

So, I would conclude that it varies a whole lot from state to state.

That sounds pretty much standard for out of state vehicle purchases to me. The state you buy the vehicle in issues a transit permit (a typically 30 day temporary registration), and you pay taxes and registration fees in your home state once you get the vehicle back there. Sometimes the dealer will collect the estimated tax etc. for your home state from you and then write a check to give the DMV, which may be useful if you wish to include it in your financing. If you're paying cash, it obviously makes little difference whether or not your money goes through your dealer's bank between you and the DMV.

The only thing mentioned that the dealer isn't covering for you is the registration fee for California. They are covering the Indiana transit permit fee and apparently the California taxes. I don't get the sense they're being dishonest or underhanded. Likewise, they presumably aren't including a California state safety/emissions inspection, as that's not an Indiana fee and obviously they aren't themselves authorized to perform California inspections.

Be very glad you aren't dealing with Massachusetts for an out of state purchase....

(By the way, I think usually the term "registration" is used for vehicles and "licensing" is used for drivers, with the exception of "license plates" which just confuse the terminology.)

My finance company took care of all of those items for my. They did all of the math and collected the money from me and paid tax, registration etc and mailed the plates to me. I used a plate from another truck i own and drove home through 5 states. No hassle, no issues. My plates came in the mail.

Ok reason why I ask this is I specifically asked for a OTD price and told them I don't care how they come up with the price as long as EVERYTHING is included and I offered a set price of $XXX and if they excepted it we have a deal.
The salesguy guy emails back ok we got it OTD at your offer price
Then he sends over a agreement priced out for us to sign and fax back.
It only had purchase of MH , doc fees. and tax for my cty/state.
No mention of license/registration.
Which I replied back NO you didn't meet my price ! Because if you had it would have included the license/registration, the full doc fee and a couple other items we had discussed . Those items were nowhere on the paperwork.

His reply back was they give you the 30 day plate and that was their final offer on the table....

Which I haven't replied back because it just totally frosted my ass how this salesguy once again turned into a deceiving, lying typical used car salesperson I have been dealing with for the last 3 months with at least 10 different RV dealerships from New to used, this one only being the out of state one...

I guess he figured if I just overlooked the items and signed he had me hooked ?

Go buy a trip permit at your local DMV office. Take it with you when you pick up your new toy. Easy and legal

Yes it is the norm. Your vehicles are always registered in your own state. You can let the dealer figure out all that and charge you to do it, or you can get the temp permit and do it yourself.

We've purchased three times out of state, two trailers and one motorhome. All three times the dealer has figured out tax and registration for our state, collected the fees as part of the purchase transaction, then issued a check to our state's DMV and gave it to us along with giving us a temp plate. We then went to the DMV to register and pay the sales tax.

Editing to add that the trailers were new, MH was purchased used...but same thing each time.

We purchased out RV in AZ. The dealer drove Motorhome to NM. It had 90 day AZ plates on it. We then drove motorhome to MI. In MI. we transferred title, paid MI. taxes and bought plates.
