Why do we carry a spare tire around?

Hi Folks,

THIS IS MENT TO BE A DISCUSSION. Since the beginning of cars and RV,s, we have always carried a spare tire. With a Roadtrek, none of us are able to change a tire, especially those of us who are 75 years or older, We all have AAA type policies that gets somebody else to come out and change the tire. Today, I had AAA come out on a flat tire on my car. They pumped it up and suggested I go get it checked. 15 bucks later, a nail hole was fixed.

The total weight of a tire is 80 pounds. Add a spare tire holder we go up to over 100. That is weight that cost gas.

The technology of tires is much better than years past.

From what I have heard, RV companies are selling RV,s without spare tires. Even Good Sam Club says you don,t need one,

So, why carry one?

I agree with the OP I have no intention to change a tire any longer and really don't care if I have a spare or not, you can wait comfortably in your Class B until one is brought to you.

The problem is you will be waiting in the "Dead Zone" with the very real possibility of dying on the shoulder of the interstate or highway. I have Coach Net and will call them if I have a tire problem. If they can respond quickly I'll wait. What I will not do is just sit there indefinitely waiting for some chucklehead to plow into my coach.

I carry a spare and everything needed to safely change it out in just a few minutes. This Forum is full of stories of folks who have had to wait hours for ERS to arrive. To do so on the shoulder confirms that you have a death wish. If you don't have a spare you are going to get bent over when they bring/sell you a tire, assuming they can find the right tire.

If you don't carry a spare how about fire extinguishers, insurance, first aid kits and the working knowledge to utilize them? I'm just not in the habit of letting others make potentially life and death decisions for me.

    As always.... Opinions an YMMV

  • I agree if your tire is common there is less reason to carry unless you are often some distance off the beaten path. Some trailers and class A etc. probably should carry a spare as it is often easier to find a guy to mount a tire on a holiday or Sunday afternoon vs. finding the actual tire you need. I carry a serpentine fan belt for the same reason.
  • I have been driving a car without a spare tire for a little over 3 years, no flats no problem but i am also in a reasonably sized area and my tires are run flats. Would I drive my B without a spare, heck no. We go too far off the beaten path to expect our tire size to necessarily be readily available to our tow service provider. If they come out with run flats for vans I would probably still carry a spare due to the places I like to travel.
  • I carry mine as a matter of convenience and a type of insurance.

I think about being some place where I don't have cell connection with which to call a road service. I firmly believe that if I carry that which may fail, it will never fail... it's always the thing I didn't expect that fails.
As a 67 yr old, small framed woman, I'm still able, thankfully, to change a tire.
  • Because everyone should be able to change a tire, except for maybe a massive vehicle like a class a. Heck, even my nieces can change a tire.

He takes the spare that we have and changes it for the damaged one..

Pretty hard to just add some air when it looks like this.

Agree and that is what they usually look like. If he does have a spare it would probably be the wrong size or way overpriced. I will always carry a spare. Have used one on all of the vehicles that I have owned. JMO
  • I get what you are saying but with so many different wheel & tire sizes it really makes sense to carry a spare. I would help anyone I saw who had a flat if they had the equipment. It still makes sense to me to carry a spare and equipment for a change. Rare as it is a repair person can take a long long time to come.
