Will 32 gallons of propane last 2 weeks in this weather?

We are leaving on a 2 week trip to Connecticut this weekend, and this will be the coldest weather we have travelled in with the motor home.
Is it likely that my 32 gallon tank of propane will be able to heat my 39 foot 3 slide motor home for that long without a refill? We will use the propane to operate the furnace, run the refrigerator while on the road for about 24 hours of driving, and do some limited cooking. We won't use gas to heat water.

If it won't, is it safe to carry an extra tank of propane secured in my cargo bay? I have the proper apparatus to connect an extra tank while sitting.

Any advice would be appreciated.

  • I used to go 7~10 days on seven gallons but that was in 23 ft, in Calif
39 ft three slides, yeah I would take the extra tank
And be prepared to go refill the main tank
Really they is no excuse for "I thought I could do it"
    Just poor planning
    Been there done that
  • I used 24 gallons a week last winter at 13 to 19 degrees. That was in addition to two electric heaters. So your guess is as good as anyones
  • I filled our 2003 Flair right after buying it in Apr, have been on 5 trips. No furnace use so far, but the fridge most of the time on every trip, water heater every time, for the most part of every trip. Showers, dishes, etc.

I'm still showing, as of this last weekend, right at 3/4 of a tank. I'm not even sure if mine is 32 gallons. I don't think it is, or it doesn't appear to be that big.
  • I also use a small electric heater when in colder temps. I leave it on all night in the living room area with the thermostat turned down on the furnace so the bedroom stays cooler. Then crank up the furnace when we get up. As mentioned before, always helps to leave the main living area slides in if the temps are really low.
  • Thanks for the replies. I always have filled up my propane tank at the corner
station by my house and never paid much attention to other places where I could buy it before. I'm hoping that I won't have to disconnect once we get set up in Connecticut for 10 days. Maybe I'll be lucky and we'll have enough gas to last. I think I'll leave the extra tank at home.

Thank you all for the input.

  • We would be able to do it. Turn down your heat some at night. Do you have two furnaces? Turn the one out front way down and maybe leave the rear one a little warmer. Take an extra blanket. Also, you don't really need all three slides open. If you leave one of the front ones closed, it reduces the amount of space to heat and will probably reduce some heat loss.

They sell propane almost every where. Check out the gas stations, U-Haul, Camping World and most RV parks. You won't have problems finding it if you look around.

  • We have never had trouble finding propane (if we needed a refill) while on the road.
  • Depends on how cold it is. There is a lot more gas in there than you would think, as it expands over 60% from the amount of liquid. Although we use an electric heater whenever we can, we have gone for over a week in every cold weather( below freezing every night) with plenty left over. Worst case is that you would have to disconnect and go somewhere to refill.
