windshield coming out of class A

We bought a 2006 33H Herriecane yesterday. When we where almost home the windshields poped out. I called the place I bought it they are having someone come to my house and fix it. My concern is will this happen all the time or why does this happen ? We were on the pavement the whole time.
  • Check underneath and see if a weld has broken on the braces that attached the front fiberglass cap to the chassis. This would allow the front cap to flex more than normal. It could also be that the hole for the windshield was cut too large at the factory, in which case this will happen again.
  • The windshields come loose from the twisting and flexing of the body while driving and using the leveling jacks.

A few years ago the windshields on our 96 Southwind were coming out, there were small gaps between the glass and body.

A local RV dealer recommended an auto glass shop in the area.

I took it to the glass shop and they removed both windshields.
The tech told me the glass was not installed properly at the factory, they did not use enough sealant.

Both windshields were reinstalled, using the original rubber gasket and, enough sealant.

I have had no problems since they were resealed.

Don't let them just caulk or add more sealant. Do it right the first time.
  • This kind of situation is completely unacceptable and you need to take immediate measures to either have the dealer provide a permanent fix or give the unit back. I was in a coach when the owner hit the levelers and the windshield glass pulled 1/2" out of the rubber. He had seen this before, done nothing and was now simply out of luck. I don't know if it was a problem with the glass/molding or the levelers or what but it was very, very bad and this owner was simply stuck! What would happen if the coach had to take an out of level road crest? Pop out like yours did? Holy....Stuff!
  • I have had to have my windshield adjusted twice. Meaning it came out a bit so you could see between the rubber and the glass. The second time was 3+ years ago and we have put 20,000 miles on it since so likely the issue is in remission.

Class A bodies flex and sometimes the glass can come out a bit. I hope when you say pop out you don't mean they popped out and fell to the road. Mine came out just a tiny bit. The gap on mine was just in one small corner and it was a very small gap.

Just have the dealer re-seat the glass and you should be fine. My problem has not come back.
  • I have heard of this happening in motorhomes and in certain makes and models it is more of a problem (can't remember which ones, read about it awhile ago). If it were mine, I would want to make sure that the repair was done by one of the major glass repair shops that work on automobile windshields all the time. Perhaps it was previously repaired with improper adhesives, and/or the installer did not use proper methods. Anyone who works on a windshield SHOULD BE WEARING BLUE GLOVES. The oils from your skin can keep the adhesives from curing properly. Many/ most facilities for automobiles sublet windshield repairs to the glass shop for professional repair/installation. The rv shop should also.
  • I'm baffled. Never heard of windshields in any vehicle just popping out. They are typically glued in place, so maybe they were improperly cemented down? In any case, should be an easy fix, and should never happen again. It is good that it happened when it did, so there's no question the seller would fix it. Even if you had a 30/30 warranty: ie, 30 minutes or 30 feet, whichever comes first.
