Windy conditions

We're currently in Palm Springs at a RV resort. Lots of spaces with Park models and RVs in between them. Forecast is for high winds, 30 to 40 with gusts as high as 50-60. Question is, has anyone been in similar conditions? We have a Winnebago 35ft Sightseer....DW is concerned....THANKS

Your MH can sustain high winds if you are facing them, since the obvious comparison would be driving.
  • Sat out a 70-80 mph wind in Furnace Creek resort CG. We were rear end to the wind next to the chain link fence and still rocked a bit. Also shredded part of the slide toppers. Rigs across the highway at the N.P. cg really took a beating. One fiver had a solar array set up on the ground and it wrapped part of it around the fiver and blew the rest away. When we got home, the insurance replaced the awning and the slide toppers.
We left for Las Vegas the next day and a few minutes after we pulled out on the highway, we got hit by a gust of wind that stopped us from 40 mph and caused the awning to unroll. had headwinds all the way to past Pahrump and got about 4 MPG from Ridgefield to Las Vegas.
  • I have stayed at an RV resort in Palm Springs a few times, and I remember a few years ago where the wind was really bad. The good thing was that the wind was from west to east and the resort had lots of big trees blocking the wind for the coaches that were in the resort. It never really bothered us much. Now with winds over 40 mph I would not get on the highways at all. I done it once and it damaged the sprocket on the awning. Luckily I spotted it in time and I stopped in a rest area and secured it so that it would not unravel. They can do lots of damage to the coach if they unravel and the awning acts like a parachute slamming against the coach causing lots of damage.
  • On the road and winds over 40 I head for a campground.

We have been in winds over 60 in campground lots of rocking even with the jacks down. More than once set through tornado warnings can't outrun them so head to bathhouse or just hunker down and pray.

Never worried but do know it can get dangerous from really bad storms with creeks flooding, lighting, trees blowing over, high winds.
  • Been in high winds many times. If you are lucky enough you will not be broadside to the wind but even if you are in most cases that is not a real problem. If you have slide toppers you may reach a point where it will make sense to pull in your slide. Other than that not much more you can do except be aware of where the wind is coming from and whether it will rip the door out of your hand if you open it to go outside.
