Wireless tow lights - recommendations

Our 2011 CRV dinghy is getting a little long in the tooth. LOTS of miles. Bought a 2014 CRV with only 90k over the weekend and so starting the process to set that up to tow. 10 years ago when I set up the old one, I went through the trouble of running an independent set of wires inside the taillight housing for the tow lights. Super clean and just plug in to tow. For the new toad I am wondering if a wireless set of taillights would be easier. Found these on Amazon.

Rated good, pretty simple to operate. Anyone have any feedback or another option that works well? I want to remain independent of the vehicle's own lights because I wanted to avoid running a battery charge cable and diode.

  • In the "if anyone cares" category; I have an update. On a recent trip from our home in NC to NOLA, the direct wired tow lights on our old CRV finally went out, so this forced my hand. Doing a little quick research, went to a Harbor Freight in NOLA and found a well reviewed set of wireless lights. Not cheap, but neither is the blue ox kit to wire to the existing car's lights, so I went for it. Here's the link.

    HF wireless light kit.

    Initially they didn't work. Seems with a lot of new RVs like mine that have LED tail lights, the voltage is too low at the pin to activate the system correctly, plus you get errors on your dash. It needs a load resistor 7 pin adapter. I was able to get my hands on one from Amazon.

    7 pin tow light adapter

    Using that, they work perfectly and made it home from NOLA to NC. So while an expensive affair, I now have a set of good working, wireless taillights that I can use for any car. As I mentioned in my initial post, our toad is getting old so we just purchased a another, newer CRV but not yet set up to tow. So this works on the old and will will work on the new. The cost for the blue ox direct wire kit with diodes and fuse disconnects that I was going to buy would have been close to the same cost and it mitigates the hassle of running all the wiring, which as I found out, gets pretty beat up over time. These are super easy and much brighter than the OEM lights. Chargeable and the trip home - about 800 miles over 2 days, the battery meter still indicates a full charge. We didn't run at night however, but still, based on some of the other units I reviewed, run time is outstanding.

  • We have used wireless tow lights on our vehicles for the past 7 years now with no issues. Ours take 4 AA Batteries each and are not rechargeable. The Batteries last for at least 10 days of driving, maybe more. I would be leary of purchasing wireless tow lights that only last 8 hours as the ones you posted do. Recharging every day on the road will get old fast. I would recommend you look for ones on Amazon with longer lasting Batteries.

      The Hazard Fraught ones claim up to 100hrs in a charge. li-ion batteries. Seems ok and they’re pretty cheap ($139 seems stupid cheap if they work and you can get a few years of good use out of them and no install effort).

      You bring up a good point on the run time. I didn't see where it's stated or reviewed that they only last 8 hours. Where does it say that? But yeah, if it's only 8 hours (and run time is certainly shortened with stop and go or running with lights on) You have a link to the one's you use?

      On edit; I saw some reviews mention the 8 hours and go further to say that the batteries lose life over time and limit to 4-5 hours. I may go back to the hard wired version that mount in the existing lens. Harder to run, but once set up super clean and just plug them in when towing.

      These are the newer versions of the one I have now;

        In Amazon,  tap the picture of the lights and then scroll to the right about 4 times. Run time is listed in the top righthand corner.

        These are the wireless tow lights I use. Great battery life.
