Wiring in the wall?

I'm planning to call Winnebago about this Monday; but maybe someone knows today.

I'm installing a bigger fire extinguisher on our 2007 Itasca Navion, in the same location as the original pitiful little extinguisher: right inside the coach door, just to the left of the door. The original's bracket is screwed to the outside wall of the RV. Up at switch height, above this location, are several switches: the on/off switch for the step, the porch light, and the inside ceiling lights. Wiring for these switches is buried in the wall.

In order to fit the larger extinguisher, I need to add an angled block of wood, screwed to the wall within about an inch or inch and a half of the location of the screw holes for the original (and to the seatback for the dinette table, but I've already confirmed that's not a problem).

Since the original extinguisher is screwed to the wall below those switches, can I assume that the wiring does not run straight down the wall, and that I can screw through the same general location but an inch or so to one side of that location? Or do I need somehow to trace the wiring?

I've looked through the wiring diagram that Winnebago provides for this RV, but it doesn't address this question - the diagram tends to show where wiring surfaces from inside the walls, but not the route the wire takes in the walls.
  • I would not assume anything, pull the switch box above and have a look. when they build these rv,s they do whats easy and move on.
  • I would not worry about it. It's unlikely the wiring is there and even if it is, a screw will usually just move it aside.

It's not a hollow wall, the wall is full of foam and the wires won't move. I think it's worth giving Winnebago a call.

Where the wires would be is not solid - they don't form the foam around the wires.
The foam would be channeled out for the wires and there will be lots of room.

That's the way I would do it.

The wires are embedded in the foam in my Winnie.

You may never have had the exciting experience of driving a pointy screw into a wiring run; once was enough for me, even at low voltage.

I talked with a customer service rep at Winnebago today (the customer service supervisor, as it turned out; when I went to praise his good service to his supervisor, he told me he was the supervisor, so I suggested he pat himself on the back), and Winnebago's got engineering drawings for the wall panels that show the wire routing. There is, indeed, wiring in that wall, but it's 17" from the floor, and the mounting block for the new fire extinguisher will top out at 14-1/2", with the first screw an inch below the top of the block. So I'm safely far away.

Winnebago's consistently given me good, knowledgeable customer support when I've called; glad that our purchasing decision turned out to include that feature!
