Biscuits

Roy and Lynne most of the folks here have covered it. I do the dutch oven baking with my own biscuits.

If you're not comfortable with doing dutch ovening I would recommend you get a small toaster oven. Those are really handy and can be used at home if you don't want to heat up the big oven. It can also be used to broil. If you want to keep it simple I'd go that route. We have one of these Hamilton Beach compacts and it'll broil a steak, make fish sticks, 4 good sized biscuits and whatever else you want to chew on from the oven. Works great in our rig. When we get home we take it out and set it on the counter.

This topic is dear to my heart as our B does not have an oven. Ugh. And the microwave isn't also a convection oven and I can't replace it with one as it is smaller than usual. I did try frying some biscuits on a griddle that I can bring along... But - I definitely will try the frying pan with foil deal since I can put a top on and it should be more ovenish than the open griddle.

Cast iron skillet ~ cast iron trivet ~ couple of layers of foil ~ canned or home made biscuits ~ cast iron lid ~ steady medium heat. butter the foil. watch carefully til you get the hang of it.

Why do those of you who so answered think ALL of those with microwaves HAVE a convection oven.?? JM2¢ ~~~ YMMV

I purchase frozen biscuits and we do cook them on top of the stove in our RV or in our DO on the fire, if we have one. I have also put 2 in the microwave for about 1 minute 20 seconds and then brown each biscuit in a skillet with a small bit of butter.

The microwave ones are not quite as good as the ones that have been baked in the oven, but they are much better than canned biscuits.

This mornings frozen biscuits cooked on our cast iron griddle. I brown them, then flip, cover with a lid and "bake" on top of the stove.

You can fry canned biscuits. I was stunned years ago to watch a friends wife fry a few pounds of bacon in a big cast iron skillet then fry two cans of biscuits in the bacon grease. Get them brown then flip them. Drain on paper towels. Decadent.

Dutch oven works, but works best with top heat, like coals from a fire on top.

Decent biscuits take plenty of fat and good flour like White Lily, only sold in the South. For camping I like the prepared ones that come in a tube.

I have also used my electric fry pan as an oven for making biscuits. Just put a double layer of foil in the bottom, grease it a bit and preheat - add biscuits and bake.

Put 1/2 inch of oil with some bacon grease in the skillet then fry the biscuit dough. You need to roll it out into thin rounds about the thickness of two tortillas. I use the canned dough because it is already in thin sections.

The dough will puff up and make great tasting biscuit hush puppies. Try those with the gravy and you will likely prefer them to regular biscuits.

Not the question you asked, but to save time we substitute sourdough English muffins for baked biscuits when on the road. But a dutch oven will work well as an oven.
