Meal in Foil

Shucks, being PC has even hit campfire cooking. Those are Hobo dinners.

We did a lot of 'hobo dinners' on our Weber Smokey Joe BBQ when we were traveling

Chicken, pork, beef, root veggies, potato chunks, bell peppers, chunks of onions, whole garlic cloves, seasoning, splash of olive oil.........yummmmmmmmm

Our favorite meat was sliced smoked sausage. We would stop at a store and browse the produce for the vegetables, grab a package of smoked sausage and we were good to go.The variety is endless.
One "trick" we often use is to sprinkle some powdered broth or onion soup mix on the vegetables.

Boil large pot of water, add small, new unpeeled red potatoes, peeled carrots, a peeled and quartered onion, husked sweet corn and a ring bologna or sausage of your choice. Boil gently until done. So good eaten at the picnic table and even better with a great view (think Niagra Falls).

Cub Scouts call them "foil cooking." Have been doing them for years, and LOVE 'em.

Our favorite is sausage as a meat with white potatoes and vegetables of choice.

Back in the early sixties, that's 19. I went to college at Westminster College, men's school, in Fulton, MO a rather rural area.
We used to make these as hamburgers with large slice of onion, salt, pepper, etc..
Then in the evening we would build a fire out in the country somewhere and cook them over the coals even occasionally with a few beers.
Frequently with a young lady from William Woods College, an all women's college across town.
Ah, the good old younger days!

I refer to those as Cowboy Packets. Sometimes I add barbecue sauce. Or a pat of butter, maybe a grind or two from an Italian seasoning grinder.

When I was a kid at summer camp in Prince William Forest Park near Quantico, VA, we used to hike as a group to a nature lodge a few miles away. When we got there around lunchtime,the cooks would have a batch of those ready to go onto the fire.

Headed to Prince William FP in a couple of weeks, so maybe we'll have foil cooking that night.

At the risk of sounding like a total idiot...roughly how long to you cook these? I wouldn't want to repeatedly open the foil to check, but not a fan of overly raw burger.

And this can be done right on the coals or a low rack on a fire? I did something similar with chicken on our little propane grill once. I am so concerned about over or under cooking.

For us, we do them over a propane grill, set on medium, 20 minutes per side.
