Smoker

As a Newbie to camp cooking we bought a Smoker from a garage sale for $10. He had used it once & included everything & verbal instructions. Thought it might be simpler to cook some stuff. We bought some cheap meat, some beef ribs & a small steak for a trial cook since I have never smoked anything. I anticipated a disaster. I cooked it on low for 5 hours. I used the water pan & wet wood chips as he instructed. Well after 5 Hours I decided it was ready so I got a table fork to remove it from the grill. When I lifted the fork, the meat fell apart. Unbelievable! It all tasted fantastic. Best tasting meat I have ever had. I shared a bite with my fiver Good Sam's Club neighbor in the next space & they agreed. It is so easy. You don't have to monitor it at all on low. We love it!

Good job, and smoking is not difficult if you follow some basic guidelines. When I first got my Weber Smokey Mountain smoker the biggest mistake I made is I used way too much wood and therefore had way too much smoke which overpowered the meat. Entire forums are devoted to smoking and much can be learned there.
  • Smoking meat is easy, but i agree with Dave, you have to monitor it. It's basically all about the amount of the right smoke and maintaining the right temperature for the time needed. later you'll find some meats do better with a foil wrap at a specific point, some need a different finish temp, the right wood for the right amount of time, and the list goes on, but any need to rush is virtually non existent. Most time frames in smoking are relatively broad.
  • We use a Master Bilt electric smoker. It works great and is pretty much set it and forget it. Depending on what you are smoking you may need to baste and or add wood chips from time to time.

Frozen Mac & Cheese comes out with great smoky flavor...just remember to take the foil off of the pan otherwise it just taste like Mac & Cheese. I know from experience...can you say oops.
  • As a long time smoker, congratulations on your first smoke. BUT, don't think it is a set it and forget it method of cooking. You got lucky once but I wouldn't push it.
