Weber Q 1200

We just bought our first Weber Q.

Before hand we had the Coleman Road Trip Grill....needless to say my husband was never happy with the cooking and cleaning performance of this girl.

Weber Q, bought it and upon getting it home my husband instantly got the grill fired up for cooking.

He really likes this grill....he likes the way the chicken cooked on the grill.

So now I am asking, is there anyone that wants to share 'tricks of the trade"?

Hints or suggestions on keeping the inside bottom of the grill clean and looking decent?

Does everyone use the throw away aluminum pan that comes in the grease catching pan? Where do you buy extra aluminum pans(other the Weber's online site)? We actually covered the pan with foil and that worked well.

So far the grill is looking pretty good....

Thank you for any help.
  • If you want a clean grease trapper/funnel, spray a degreaser like Zep on it and wait 5 minutes or so. Then wipe and rinse it off thoroughly. Repeat if necessary. Zep doesn't have the harsh lye chemicals of most oven cleaners. Pure sudsy ammonia works well too: same instructions.
  • Take the burner tube out to really be able to get the bottom pan clean. One screw holds it in. Note: If you are running this on a large propane tank connected by hose, be sure that when you turn on gas initially on the tank, that you let the hose pressurize for at LEAST 1 minute before lighting. There is device in it that will turn off full flow and it will not light. I have made this mistake several times on both of my Q's. We also use foil in the drip tray for easy clean-up.

Love my 11 year old Weber Q. As to cleaning, it depends on how clean you want to get it. I clean mine well about once a year and the rest of the time I just burn the grill off before cooking and hit it with a grill brush. As to the pans, they are a must as you will get grease out the bottom if you don't have the pan in place. The Weber pans are inexpensive and sold in a multi pack (don't remember how many are in the pack) but I just wipe the pan out and reuse it many times. Great choice in grill you made. Other than that, check the burner from time to time as the small holes clog up over time. I take a small needle held with vise grips to quickly clean the holes out. I've found even a small wire brush is not very effective on the burner holes and just clogs them back up. The needle works best. Same for my full size Weber Genesis in the back yard.

Don't clean it! That baked on food is part of the flavor. ;)

That pretty much sums up my feeling too. Don't see the point in getting it super clean. All the action is on the grill anyway.

    Thank you all.

Last night after using the Weber Q, my husband cleaned the grills from cooking chicken.

There is a couple of cooked on areas. He wants perfect. Guess he will get over this in time as we use the new Weber Q more ;)

Oh he did mention about using oven cleaner on the grill rack. Any advice on this? A yes or a no to get the baked on food stains off?

I leave the chicken pieces on mine and burn 'em off next time.
  • Lots of great comments and feed back with information.

As far as cleaning the grill grates super clean....well the Weber Q 1200 is broken in now....no more worries on that. ;)

Drip pans good to know there is many locations to buy at. I will check Walmart then look at Home Depot before ordering online.

I like to hear that the Weber Q has been a good unit and many like it. Part of the reason for us to make this purchase is because we have been looking at other campsites when out camping, and bay far a Weber Q is what is out most by a campers trailer.

We are going for a 5 day camping trip in another week (Whoa! for weekend warriors this is exciting) and am going to cook a whole chicken and a tri-tip. We are excited because this could of never been tackled with our old Coleman Road Trip.

    Again thank you to all.
  • I posted in error thinking that you said the Weber Q was broken now. I re-read it and it said Broken IN!!!!
