Camp Chef Fire Pit/Ring

I am looking to buy a propane fire pit / ring. I have been looking at the Camp Chef fire ring. My concern is that it is only 15 inches round. Normally a wood fire pit would be bigger. Does anyone have the Camp Chef or something better? I like that the price is under $100 as we will really only be using this a few times a year.
  • Go to the camp Chef website. They have several styles of Fire options in different sizes. The one described is the smallest and they have several of a larger size if that is what you are looking for. The smaller size is nice for travelling as it doesn't take as much room in the back of the truck.
  • We use our Camp Chief a lot. As a matter of fact since we got it we stopped bringing our propane grill and do almost all our cooking on the camp chief. We have the tail gate of our toy hauler set up as a porch and we can use it on the ramp.
  • Lowes dropped the ball and didn't get it to me in time. It actually worked out better for me. I was able to pick it up for less at a local Big 5 Sporting Goods store cheaper than Lowes had it for. I am going to pop it out of the box today and give it a try on the driveway tonight.

I use a portable fire pit that's square shaped and 17.5". Initially thought it would be too small when I compared my mind's eye to the size of a campsite's firepit but it gives lots of light and flicker play.

I have one, and we love it. It works great for those times when a wood fire is not allowed or when wood is just inconvenient. The 15" size is not a problem, and once the lava rock gets hot, it puts out an amazing amount of heat. I modified mine by changing out the fold-out legs; made new ones out of the same 1/4" rod but longer, so it now sits about 10" off the ground instead of 4".

While it isn't big enough for a very large group, it does suffice for 6-8 people. We've even used it at a friend's house for a party by just setting it in their built-in outdoor fire pit; 8-12 people around it, no problem.

Got mine at Amazon for $80, free shipping.

  • We have had the Camp Chef fire ring for a couple of years. It works well. There are times when I have wished it could be bigger too, but given the propane usage and the storage space available it really is about the right size. Bigger is not always better.
  • If you are in and around the Phoenix Metropolitan area, Marvel has rings that are used to build back yard fire pits. I am sure you could check it out and then build your own. Just a thought. Good Luck & Be Safe ! ! !
