A Question on 24HourPetWatch.com

Several years ago I had Baby Girl chipped when the local Humane Society was having a special. The tag is from 24HourPetWatch. I was told by the Humane Society that they would file all of the work. Never really checked until the other day when at the local vet. Had him scan her. The chip will not read on his reader. He told me that that chip can only be read by a 24HourPetWatch scanner. Can anyone provide info if this is factual?

Interesting stuff.....we just had our latest addition neutered and chipped last week and Not knowing much about the many companies providing "chip's", it now makes wonder about ours? I did get a brochure from "Home Again" and as indicated, their first year is Free and their premium package after the first year is 17.99 But even without the premium service, their chip is still suppose to be registered. I guess I'll do my own checking on that in the near future.

Homeagain I do have experience with- that's the service we use.

The one-time registration puts the animal in the system for "life". No annual fees, no charge for information changes like new address/contacts etc.

I guess I should add that both dogs we have registered with them have been so for at least five years...this was the policy when we signed them up, anyway, and when I periodically check they're still in the system.

  • I'd just call 24hr. Petwatch and ask them.

You could also use that call to make sure that the registration actually went through and is still "current". It's not always automatic, as a friend of mine found out after chipping by a similar method (dunno if it was this company).

Some companies have annual fees, some sell lifetime "memberships", and some a choice of either.
  • Maybe. There are several versions of microchips operating on different frequencies. There are universal scanners that will at least tell you if a chip is present and will probably read the number. Proprietary scanners will only scan the chip on the frequency it's designed for. Your vet may not have had a universal scanner.

Also, depending on when this chip was placed in your pet, there may have been a change in the microchip frequency used by 24hourpetwatch, I'm just not familiar with the history on that specific brand.
