coyotes

I saw a homemade version of coyote rollers on the interwebs (picture on FB, not sure if I could find it again but a google search might) the other day.

Basically a cable strung across the top of the fence with a smaller diameter length of pvc strung on it, and a larger diameter one outside of that.

Personally I love my fido-shock, but in areas where it isn't practical for whatever reason, the roller idea might be very good.

Check this out. Quite a few of my California friends have had to install these since the coyote population has increased so much.

Works great for keeping fence jumper dogs IN too.

My brother has pet goats and a Great Pyr to keep them safe. He and my SIL say they hear coyotes all the time, but I don't think they've ever challenged the Great Pyr.

Residents in our valley tell us about the coyotes all around the valley. They were on this farm killing fawns before we moved in; so far we've not heard them around since we moved to this farm. Either the ones around us not have not acquired a taste for sheep or Sam (working Maremma Sheepdog) has put out the word that they are not welcome on his farm. They sometimes come to the woods behind our house. I've never seen them but they wake me up out of a dead sleep when they howl. It's eerie!

Has several packs around my place back up in Wisconsin. Here to tell you they can take down larger prey than they are supposed to be able to.
They are so overpopulated that in my area you could kill them without a permit and DNR encouraged it because they were taking down a lot of live stock.

I had to be very careful with my goats where they went out back in the lower forty and at night I always had to put them up. And about once a month the farmers would loose all their barn cats. Guess it was like their Friday fish fry only once a month to the coyotes.

Had a Reba CD on real loud one night and each pack started up howling to the music and then you could hear another pack in another direction start up. One particular song would set them off. If it wasn't so creepy it could have been funny.

Wild carnivores are not supposed to behave like wild hunters???

What Do Coyotes Eat?

Almost anything! Coyotes are opportunistic and eat what is most available at a given time or place within their range of tastes and can change over time. Coyote diets in the Adirondacks in the 1950s were dominated by snowshoe hares and a variety of smaller animals; they also included significant amounts of insects and berries in late summer and early fall. For the past 30 years deer have dominated winter diets (80-90%); spring and summer diets consisted mostly of deer (50-60%) with lesser amounts of beaver, snowshoe hare and insects and berries in late summer. Diets in the 1970s in central New York included only a small percent of deer and were dominated by rabbits, woodchucks, small mammals and fruit. Many recent anecdotal reports suggest deer may now comprise more of the diet than previously.

Most of the deer diet would be fawns or carrion.
