Do you keep Cat caged while traveling

We're going on a long road trip in our Class C and will take our cat with us. She loves snuggling up in her bed IN the clothes closet while we are at our campsite, but to keep her in her small cat carrier day after day while we are on the road is worrysome. Naturally we would stop every couple hours so she could use the kitty box, stretch her legs, etc., but we're wondering what others are doing who travel with a cat??? She has only gone on short trips thus far so we really don't know what to expect. Any suggestions would be appreciated.
  • If your cat does get out try this trick that worked with my (normally outdoor at home) cat. I would ignore him for a few minutes rather than chasing him immediately. He would shortly get distracted and start exploring. Then I could walk right up to him and pick him up.

Yup. Soft side crate with open mesh was the only crate my cat finally agreed upon for RV'ing! :B
Room for comfy bed, food/water and at the other end litter box. Crate folds up complete flat in a 12" round for out of the way storage when parked at CG. I DIY'd mine to stay in place with piece of plywood with 2 legs to fit in corner of bedroom. Makes for a nice clean place for litter box and to contain cat when needed.

  • One cat is in one of those collapsible wire dog crates and the other one is loose. The crated one gets breaks frequently. She just is not a good traveler to have running across the dashboard or near the feet of the driver. The other one is on the lap or absorbing heat off the doghouse or eating, like we aren't't even moving.

We don't use a carrier when traveling. Our cat will make herself comfortable on the bed or a dinette cushion. If she tries to come to the cockpit area when we are traveling my wife will shoo her away.
  • Depends on the cat, our girls , and one boy hang out in there own cozy spots while we travel down the road....
  • My two girls are placid travelers. They sleep on the sofa or dinette while we're moving down the road. They have access to food, water and their litter box. I would never lock them away from their people!
  • We have always carry ours in a carrier or small kennel. "Their" door is only open when the people door is closed
  • If the cat(s) get hyper and try to run for the door when you stop, I'd definitely do the carrier. Nearly lost our cat one year because of that. Fortunately we caught him after 25 frantic minutes. Never let him out of the carrier until all doors were kept closed and then let him do his "duty". Back in the carrier he went in the tt, then we would get back in the truck and go.
  • We used to travel with 2 cats (they made it to 20 & 18 years of age). They rarely travel in carriers mainly because they liked to go under the coach in our first coach. We had to slide the front panel a little to the side but they would both ride under there until we stopped moving so it wasn't really necessary to confine them.

I would recommend having the carrier out and available to be used if necessary. You may find that she prefers to ride in the carrier with the door left open especially if she sees it as a safe place.
