Do You Travel With a Solo Siamese?

Last weekend I lost my beloved bestest friend, Lexi, to renal failure. It feels like my heart has been replaced by a cannonball and I wonder if anything good will ever happen again. She was a really great traveling cat!

So now we're considering adopting a new cat (no, not a replacement). There is a Siamese rescue not far away and I'm wondering if one might travel well as an only-cat in our motorhome? Anyone with any experience in that department?

I'm looking specifically at Siamese and Simese-mixes because they are known to be "chatty", smart, and reliable about using the litterbox. Also, it looks like some enjoy getting out and can adjust to walking with a harness and leash.

We would prefer a larger/sturdy cat or kitten and not the tiny/fragile looking ones. Does this breed do well as an "only"?

Thanks in advance for any first-hand info (good or bad).

Yes I do. Kinda didn't have a choice.

When I decided to go full time I had found a good home with a friend for my Siamese cat. At the last minute she changed her mind ...on the date my house closed!

So, Sam the Siamese came with me in the MH. My first big problem was the airline crate. He HATED it and let me know the whole time. After several attempts of different crates 'he' settled on liking a big soft sided crate with screens 'all' the way around. Big enough for his bed, food bowls and litter box for him to be safe when we were traveling down the road.

By the way: Siamese are not "chatty"! They darn right talk and complain all the time! If you don't want to listen to a cat that has to tell you all his 'poor me' problems all day long don't get a Siamese!:W I wouldn't have any other breed of cat. The Siamese is smart and actually likes to be around people and IMHO they thrive on being the ONLY cat!

6 years on the road and Sam loves every minute it and can't wait till we get to the CG so he can lay and bake in the windows of the MH!

May I ask where you got your cat's enclosure shown in the top photo? It looks idea for an RV.

Thanks again for the useful information!

  • Thank you, Judy and Bud, for those very kind words. They mean more than you can possibly know right now!
  • I just want to say I'm so sorry for your loss of Lexi and can relate well to that cannonball you're carrying around. We had a sealpoint Siamese from 5 weeks to 16 yrs and I still remember how painful his loss was. They do have an expiration date we can't see under all that fur, but it's just as well, so we don't spend time grieving before we have to. It's wonderful that you are thinking about a new traveling buddy. I am betting a good rescue will know their cats well enough to recommend a candidate. Best of luck to you and let us know when you find him or her.
  • Very helpful replies. Although it's probably too soon to get another cat, it's nice to know that a Siamese might make a good travel companion and wouldn't mind being an "only child".

    Thanks for the help.

  • Mine would sit in the middle of the room and when the Danes would run by too fast he would slap them across the nose, no claws out, just to tell them to slow down! What a hoot to watch and the fact that he never missed!

My first Siamese, George: When my Danes had bloat surgery he would lay across their back where the stitches were when they got home from the hospital. He did that every day until they completely recuperated and the stitches came out.

  • I would disagree with Rockhillmanor only in that they are not "complaining", they are "commenting - frequently and loudly". :D I love the breed and would not want to be without one.

Imp (pedigreed) & Joxer (rescue) travel with us most of the time. They are both geriatric (19 & 17) Since we have a 5er, they travel in the cab with us. Their carry case is strapped between the dog baskets and I can reach into the box for a quick pet or to take care of any needs. (Joxer can get car sick) Because of their ages, we need more frequent potty stops and they let us know when it is time.

Siamese tend to become *very* attached to their person. They will be friendly with other people, but still possessive over your lap. If Imp is annoyed with me and won't come when I call, all I have to do is call Joxer and Imp will come running to be sure that he is still my top cat.

They are active and curious and will find any small hole and go through it just to see what is on the other side. So you should leave it in a harness and leash until it has had time to explore your rig and show you all the hiddy-holes.

Siamese are wonderful companion cats I wish you many happy years with your new best friend.
  • Actually no, we travel with two, and yes they do "comment" when they realize we are hitting the road again.
