Our girls who eat Pure Vita dog food. :) - DustytuuExplorerOur 3 Schnauzers are so smart we have to spell some words around them! Yes we do!
- TXicemanExplorer III do not have a clue as to how this writer came up with that list. The number 3 is the only one I would put on that list.

I am pulling this back up from the dead. I had a weimaraner and our next dog will be an irish setter. My weim was thickheaded and he lacked focus. With that said, i doubt I will ever own a dog i could love more than him. He spent 9 months nuzzling my wifes pregnant stomach and let us know when she was going in to labor. My daughters learned to walk by holding his ears. My girls would dress him up in tiaras and tutus every day and have tea parties with him. He stayed at their sides through tears and colds. The list goes on and on and on.
IQs don't make great pets. Its the bond you establish with them.
Amen! In fact, too high an iq (as with GSDs and BCs), can cause a lot of problems for a dog that is just expected to be a "pet." - bt6845ExplorerWe have five chihuahuas and one chihuahua mix I swear with Pomeranian she is the doofy one. Then my 4 1/2 pound trained she is....she learned how to wake me up through the night by scratching on the pillow when she wants me to tuck her in many times a night. Love them all. Couldn't have just one they're so great.

Greyhounds are a perfect example: they never make the list of most intelligent dog, but they are extremely clever.
Sight hounds frequently make "dumbest breed" lists. Afghans, salukis, greyhounds, etc. One issue is that these dogs are not easily trained in the traditional manners that other breeds are and they aren't as biddable as, say, labs. They aren't motivated by the same things.
That's because their brains are constantly thinking of ways they can turn any situation to their advantage. One time, I was taking Max and Willow on a 14er (a 14,000 foot mountain, we did several of them together). We were all doing fine until we reached a huge boulder field near the summit. Now Max and I had no problem with the boulders, but greyhounds aren't built for climbing, so she stood for a minute on the trail at the bottom of the field looking up at us, then disappeared for a few minutes before happily trotting up to us. She had found an easier way up through the boulders. She was one of the smartest dogs I have ever been owned by; we should have been following her!
Oh, when we got to the top of the boulder field, she couldn't make it to the summit point, so I carried her the last few yards to the scroll where I signed all of our names for posterity. - Code2HighExplorerMeasuring "intelligence" requires first defining the term, and that can encompass so many variables.
My chis are not what I'd think of as geniuses, except in the area of getting into things they shouldn't eat. Then the IQ just shoots up into the stratosphere...
My greyhound/lab cross was very very smart about a lot of things. But nothing like a border collie. - nabiExplorerWhat :M....the wees have taken offense to this article !
Izzy graduated second in her obedience class and she would have been first if a lab hadn't been able to run faster on the tile floor....( I'm not bitter, really I'm not ) She looks a bit worse for wear in this pic...she had just completed her trials....
