Need advice - Which Dog Ramp?

We have a 13 year old 70lb Golden who needs much help getting into car and our Class A.

Can anyone suggest a good brand of dog ramp?

  • Thanks for the measurement and pic's!

That is the problem with our rear door.......opening is wide enough but the door sill is only flat about 15" and our ole hound doesn't like the fold down floor.
She likes the big comfy seating area for lying around and sitting up looking out windows.

Guess I'll stay with my homemade ramp......it's been working pretty good for past couple of years.
  • Finally measured my smart ramp, it's 17" width-wise from outside edge to edge.

Because of a speaker bump-out in the rear door of my truck, the ramp does not sit flush on the jamb of the door. However, if I fold down the cargo floor, the ramp does sit flat but it's rather steep. Had Dodge copied GM with the extra-wide opening rear doors, I would be all set.

I will measure it for you shortly.

Like you mentioned, it is too wide actually to fit in the back seat door jamb or whatever it's called on a truck. but it does sit flat if I raise it up a little and rest the edge on the fold down "storage floor"

    Mr. Herzher's Smart Ramp

I don't know who Mr. Herzher is, but the ramp is decent. It is mostly fiberglass construction, and collapses on itself for less storage space.

It's perhaps not as long as it could be, it sits at a pretty steep grade, but with coaxing and treats, my dog climbs it easier than simply jumping into the back seat.

  • Our ole hound started having problems getting into truck a couple yrs. back so we looked at commercial ramps..........all were too wide for rear door sill on truck.

    So I made one
1---1X3X8 cut in half for side rails
1---1X2X6 cut into 12" pieces for cross rails
2 pieces of 1/4" paneling cut into 12" x 48" (doubled up for strength)

Then after I assembled it I covered the paneling with carpet.

Even use it for getting into 5 vr......just set it on top step and up she goes.

Short enough to carry in back floor board of truck. Light weight and strong.
  • We also use the Petstep noted in the above post for our Golden. Our previous Golden (RIP) had bad hips and back legs and she used the ramp with no problem.
First tried a telescoping plastic ramp from Petsmart. But the surface was a thin slick carpet like material and she did not like it. The Petstep has a very solid feel and non slip surface. Not cheap, but far better than the first one we bought.
