Ouiser-Our Daschund

The following is the post the wife made this morning on her Facebook page:

In great sadness we share that our little four legged family member died today. Ouiser spent 15 1/2 years bringing unconditional love, joy, and laughter to us. We will dearly miss her.

This is my response:

No more jelly beans before bed time, no more waiting for a bite of what we were eating, Her favorite thing to do was to whine until I laid on the sofa with her while she napped.. This member of our family brought us such joy for so many years and we were blessed and thankful for that time, We held her close last night as she looked at us confused. Her mind was beginning to fail yet she sensed that something wasn't right, Today as we held her during those last moments she looked at us and wagged the tail that had not wagged in days as if to say: "It's O.K. the time has come and I know how much you love me.". She closed her eyes and she was gone. We look forward to the time when we may see her again.

Oh how we loved this dog. I never thought that this would hurt this much.

    And now my eyes have teared up too for I know the loss of a beloved pet. We've lost four. The pain lessens, but never goes away.

    Yes, your picture hit me like a hammer. I've read letters and posts about the loss of a pet, and it is always moving, but when I saw your dog's picture I just lost it.

    Our loss is softened somewhat, because we have 3 dachshunds including Shorty and a Yorkie.

    There's one memory of Shorty that we miss very much, and that is how we could start howling and Shorty would always chime in and then the other dogs would follow suit. Just like a wolf pack. We've tried to get the others to do it since Shorty passed, but they just won't howl without Shorty leading. We called it singing. We do miss it so.

    If it helps any, I guess the only thing that keeps me from grieving too much when I start thinking about Shorty, I try to think of the memory of when he bit the UPS guy. That seems to keep me from crying.

    Tears are streaming down my face as I looked at the picture of a dog so similar to our "Shorty" who left us on Easter Sunday this year.

    He was 14, and fell victim to a tumor in the pituitary (Cushings disease). I also held Shorty until the end.........

    I know exactly how you are feeling.

    Your dog was so much like ours, and when I read your words, I just fell apart.

    That's wonderful news! And perfect timing as it gives you room to mourn the loss of a very dear friend and at the same time, look forward to happier days. You'll have time to pick a name, wash up Ouiser's favorite toys and belongings and get them ready for the new puppy. Those twinges of loss will still hit, sometimes catching you off guard so painfully, but it's the chance we take when we choose to love a mortal. I forget who said that, but it's so true. Lucky you, to be able to start the process all over again.

    Good news. Wife has agreed to get another Doxie. It will be a few months. Son is going to Europe for business meetings in earlt October. DIL will fly over 9-10 days later and they will tour Europe. We will have the 2 grandchildren-age 4 and 2-for about 10 days. She said she is not ready at this moment because she didn't want to have a puppy with the 2 kids here.

    I am ready now!!!We go out with a number of couples on Wednesday evenings. When we left the restaurant tears flowed and wife did not want to go home because Ouiser was not there. Things are not right at home. Too quite and we have no friend to talk to. We have talked and agreed that only a red Dachshund puppy will do.

    It still feels so wrong to have buried her in the ground. There is such an emptiness in the pit of my stomach and the heart still aches.

    So sorry for your loss. The first time out without them is the hardest. Yours days will get brighter...but it will take some time.

    Ah, that sure does sound a lot like our Benjie's experience. The vet diagnosed stroke from his symptoms, and said the "gauge" that tells them when they've had enough to drink is like it's broken. I think the instinct to drink water when in distress is still strong enough to make them do it. Sorry about your loss. Ouiser sounds adorable and I know she had a happy life.
