Second Opinion On Proin Appreciated

I've been dealing with a Urinary Tract Infection with Baby Girl and she has been on several meds. She continued to leak and the vet put her on Prion 50mg, 1 pill twice a day and I was told she'd have to take it for the rest of her life. Opinions please.

  • Thank you for the comments! Kidney infection has been ruled out. The leakage is almost now non existent. Baby Girl is still taking the Prion twice a day. Since some of the medication that has been mentioned is given on a weekly basis, I'm wondering if there is any merit to backing down the Prion: to 1/2 pill twice a day, or every other day. Or stop it and watch for leaks and then start again. I don't want to be giving Baby Girl something that is not necessary. Or should I ask my vet about prescribing some of the other medications mentioned? Lots of questions. Certainly appreciate your input.

Thank you so much dturm!!!! Would I need a prescription for DES or Incurin? Since I'll be travelling, can I buy it "over the counter"? If so where?

Both are prescription. The DES is not used in people except in very limited circumstances so the patients I have on it get it through a compounding pharmacy. The Incurin is a very new drug, but works like the DES as a hormone replacement. It probably would be available through your vet (if they carry it) or through an online vet pharmacy with a prescription.

  • My Josie the beagle has been on 1/2 pill 2x daily for years

No side effects, and no more peeing on the sofa when she falls asleep
  • Has your vet completely ruled out a kidney infection?

I fought with a diagnosis of UTI and treatment of tons of different very harsh antibiotics with serious side effects to both the kidney and liver to no avail.

I brought in a urine sample and had requested it be sent out for culture. When a culture is requested they also will give you results as to which antibiotic it is susceptible to.

Results Kidney infection leading to kidney failure. And susceptible to all things amoxy. :R

Three days slow drip iv and meds and he finally turned around.

I vote for cultures all the time. Gives you the results and what to treat it with. The added cost of a culture? Will be WAAAY cheaper than going thru 20 different meds thrown at you dog to see which one sticks while he is suffering.
  • Our oldest was on this for a couple of years when she was around 10 (she is now 13). I forgot to bring her meds one weekend camping and noticed that she wasn't leaking anymore so I stopped giving her the daily dose. Think it may be because as she has gotten older she doesn't exercise as much and probably has reduced her water intake.
  • Urinary Incontinence can be a frustrating problem.

Sometimes getting the UTI cleared up eliminates the incontinence and no further medication is needed. But there are some that need life long medications.

PPA (Proin) is usually an effective therapy. I prefer DES or Incurin in most cases as it can be maintained at a once or twice a week dose with little chance of side effects.
