Your post about weight loss interests me. I feed 1 1/3 cup food twice a day, now, Diamond beef/rice, with a slight topping of chicken/pork/turkey. She's over 100# and licks her bowl clean. I have cut down on everything. Treats, as stated, are homemade. No Chinese garbage. There's a new outlet opened near us called Pet Planet. out of Canada. They express they are the gurus of pet food. Their advertised prices seem excessive. I'm figuring on taking Lady to have a diet analyzed. Have you heard of them? Their food is almost $2.00 a #. It seems like a scam.. I'm feeding them a Beef/rice Diamond dry but have used all the high dollar foods with no positive results. I really don't want to rely on the Pepcid theory. I'm not opposed to high dollar foods but so far they haven't been beneficial to my 110# puppy...
I'm trying to find a place where I can walk her that she (or myself) won't get zapped by a rattlesnake and not give her the idea that it's ok to leave the property because she left with me. I caught a church member trying to entice her into a car when the dog strayed into the parking lot. If I wouldn't of caught her, Lady would of been and possibly sold. Lady has the appearance of being an expressive Rottweiler.. Monetarily, she is worthless to us.. She's our adopted girl, nothing more, nothing less. She has a scar on her nose that may of indicated a pit fighter. That is why we adopted her. .
Some nights she will wake us with the best I can describing as "chewing growls". I check with a spotlight outside and guess what, nobody's there. She's my protector girl...She earns her keep. She's my, though overweight, girl....:)
I've had very good luck feeding Wellness Core Reduced Fat kibble. The Diamond kibble isn't the worst, but it's very high in carbs, which your dog doesn't need. I don't see why you need the gimicky specialty food you mentioned. You can get the Core Reduced Fat at Petsmart - it's not cheap, but it's effective, if fed properly, along with increased exercise.
I'd ask your vet what an ideal weight for your dog should be. I did this when I fostered my MIL's obsese cockapoo, who ended up being DOUBLE her ideal weight :E. Again, feed what the dog SHOULD weigh (and understand that the amount on the bag is most likely excessive; remember, the company's trying to sell dog food!). I would think that 1 c. 2x daily would be plenty. No toppers, no table scraps, no treats, except baby carrots and no-salt green beans (and not too many, or it can cause a gas problem - NOT what you need, lol!). I just add a little water to the kibble to enhance the aroma. Ignore the pitiful looks; your dog's health depends on it. When she begs, go play fetch or go for a walk instead. Show her that attention is more desirable than more food. Overweight dogs have similar health problems as overweight people and have shortened life spans. I know you want your sweet girl to be around as long as possible. As a large breed, joint problems are already too common; being overweight compounds the problem.
Oh, if you do switch kibbles rather than just cutting back on the Diamond, do it slowly to avoid tummy upset. It might take a couple of weeks, or even longer, since she's got a sensitive tummy. Better to switch too slowly than too rapidly.
Be firm; be strong - you can do it!! :C
