Taking dog food into the US - a good change in the rules

The US rules used to be that you could not take opened bags of dog food into the US or small amounts in baggies, regardless of where it was made. We were told the reason was because some people were emptying dog food bags and putting other substances in them. Not sure if the was at all border crossings or just in the west.

We got hauled aside 4 years ago and put under the bright lights because we had a ziplock baggie of dog food for the weekend. We thought they were going to send us to Guantanamo Bay... They don't sell small quantities of our dog's dry food in anywhere (US or Canada) so we always stopped at the ACE hardware store near the border and bought a 13 lb. bag. We can buy the same product in Canada but it used to be a lot cheaper in the US but now it's more in the US. Buying a 13 lb bag every time resulted in us stockpiling too much at home tho.

Last weekend we got pulled over for a random computer-generated inspection of our truck and TT (we have NEXUS). Cleared with flying colors of course. Just out of curiosity, I asked what the current rules are for dog food. Turns out you are now allowed to take a sealed bag into the US if it is made in the US and doesn't contain certain meat products. Better yet, if you have your dog with you, the bag can be opened. That is simply so much better for us as we camp a lot in the US.

Yep, they miss a ton of cocaine coming north because they were too busy intercepting a southbound bag of dog food. :S
  • I also found out that you can not take a woman other than your wife with you, if you don't have a note from the wife!

  • I might add that if you have NEXUS cards, it is 100 percent up to you to determine what the current rules are from the gov't website or a senior officer. Not an officer at a booth, a friend or on a forum. You can lose your NEXUS cards if you have it wrong.

One odd rule is that you cannot take a spouse's clothes across the border if the spouse isn't with you. I normally don't but did a few weeks ago due to DW's dad just going into a care home and things getting messed up. The officer at the booth asked me who owned the TT and if I had any of her clothes and I had to say I had some of her clothes. The officer sternly told me that is not permitted and that I risk losing my NEXUS card but fortunately he let me go. I've heard of folks losing their cards simply because they had an orange with them.
  • as far back as I can recall we could only ever cross with unopened bags made in the USA.

I used to have a place at The Glenn at Mt Baker and crossed at Aldergrove with our dogs quite a bit.
