Took Petunia the 9 yr old Chi to the vet today since she has been vomiting and has had diarrhea for a few days. We were changing volunteer sites plus some other LIFE situations interfered, plus didn't want to take her to a 'new' vet as we were on way to Reedsport and she saw a vet in Coos Bay a couple years ago. That is the history, now for the Update.Then on Tuesday she wasn't eating, or picking at her food, was 'irritable' and barking at anything or anyone, and temperamental, plus losing weight.So at today's appointment the vet ran tests and found that Petunia the Chi has a urinary tract infection - at first we thought it was a reaction to the Rimadyl and quit giving her that ... but that didn't change anything. And today the vet thought maybe it could be pancreatitis due to various symptoms .. (know am rambling some) .. today after blood and urine tests, turns out she is ok in other areas, only has urinary tract infection and is on amoxicillin (sp?) .. now my question:Has anyone else has problems associated with Rimadyl ? BTW got her to drink liquids today after giving her part of my burger meat .. hopefully she is on the mend .. but not sure about continuing the Rimadyl after she finishes the antibiotic .. any thoughts ?

No UTI associations. Rimadyl should have little to no effect on UTI's other than maybe relieve some of the inflammation, pain and irritation from the infection. The only reactions I have seen have been GI related, loss of appetite and or vomiting, and this is very rare. I have had a few that have had increased liver enzyme values and we've elected to stop this medication. No serious or life threatening reactions.Doug, DVM

It is so frustrating watching her age, and see some things which cannot figure out how to explain to vet and feel sort of frustrated - she is still a bit grouchy + b word plus the excessive barking .. of course we have not let enuff days go by to see if the amoxicilyn will work or not on not only the UTI, but maybe make her feel more "normal". She is on Rimadyl due to a hip and/or front leg swelling/pain. I know the pat answer is that she is "9 yrs old", but again feel a bit helpless.

Nine years old does not mean pain and health problems. Chis tend to be long lived dogs...nine is not that old. I find the idea of random pain/swelling in possibly two parts of her body a bit worrisome.

Will ask the vet about the Rimadyl continuance at that time.It has been a contest of wills in getting the liquid antibiotic in her each day. But Miss Petunia is enjoying her bit of p-nut butter after each dose.

A urinary tract infection is a common issue in pets but sometime, it can also be a sign of an underlying disease such as Cushing's disease, bladder stones.

Thank you "CA POPPY" for the words.

We are going to wait a couple more days before adding back the Rimadyl, in small doses. We are thinking we need to get a follow up Urine Test done after getting back to our home base the middle of next month. Will make us feel better when it comes back ok.

Yes, she is back to jumping, but is slower doing it than before, but so glad that she is no longer barking, barking, and barking some more. Now a simple command and she quiets down, but guess I would be barking (talking) too if was in pain.

Oh, BTW she still expects a tad bit of peanut butter morning and night (that was the only way we could get her to take the pill antibiotic). These dogs sure keep one on schedule don't they !

So glad Petunia's UTI is gone! When our little dogs stopped jumping up on things, it was from back pain caused by previous injuries and/or arthritis. We just made sure there were always cushy little dog beds on the floor in every room. We gave Poquita small doses of Rimadyl, too. It did seem to make her more comfortable with no bad side effects.

UPDATE : Finally little Miss Petunia is ok .. the UTI is all gone !

That you " dturm " for your postings. So glad for no more worries, and she has been her old self, still has difficulty jumping up or doesn't want to jump up onto anything anymore .. for now the Rimadyl is on the back burner until we get back to our home base.

By Father's Day we will back at our home base and will need to go see her "home base" vet when we get back, and talk with them about her not wanting to jump up on anything anymore.

3:15pm PST : Called the vet and the directions on the bottle were wrong !

We need to give 1/2 of a 68 mg tablet once daily .. good thing I called as the other vet said that "yes" that amount of antibiotic would make her tummy hurt ... hope she is ok by the 20th and her urine test is the 23rd .. have my fingers crossed now.

This morning today : Fri., 16 May - Have a question now -- about the : "Enrofloxacin, once a day. This will be a 5-day treatment, and hoping that it clears up and we get a clean bill of health on the 23rd when another test is scheduled."

That for Petunia who is 8 lbs - the dosage is 68 mg ... she awoke with lethargy, low appetite and an upset tummy .. have a call in to the vet, but am considering giving her 1/2 dosage twice a day ..

And yes, know that the symptoms can be for the UTI, but since she was bouncy yesterday, just was wondering what the forum thought and if anyone else has experienced this with the antibiotic we are giving Petunia .. our 8-lb chi.

Interesting - now wondering if the vet meant to say that the "Oregon Vets suggest a heartworm test twice a year" instead of making it sound like it was an Oregon Requirement ...

There are no state requirements for heartworm testing that I'm aware of. The above recommendations are the general "rules" most vets go by.

UPDATE : 15 MAY 2014 - ANOTHER URINE TEST - still has UT Infection - now is on Enrofloxacin, once a day. This will be a 5-day treatment, and hoping that it clears up and we get a clean bill of health on the 23rd when another test is scheduled.

The 10 day amoxicillin obviously did not clear up the infection.

To quote the vet (her Assessment Notes) "Petunia's urinalysis results are improved, but we are still seeing increased levels of bacteria and red blood cells in the urine. These findings indicate additional antibiotics are needed."
