After 15 yrs on ebay, acct. got hacked...

Sure seems to be a whole lot of internet security problems going around lately. This is probably a bit of a rant, but if anyone has a bright idea on how to stop this and prevent it from happening again, would like to hear.

Over the past 8 days, my ebay account keeps getting hacked into and have had 8 cases opened against me for electronics items not received ranging from about $25 to $250. Things is, I have not sold a dang thing on ebay for 2 years! Have also have some messages through ebay from buyers wondering where the item is and what the tracking no. is. Buyers have been (supposedly) from around the world - last 2 from Hungary and California. Nothing has appeared in my paypal record on any of these.

Have contacted ebay twice in the past 2 days and they said they fixed everything. Reset my ebay, paypal and personal email passwords so they shouldn't be able to do anything. But in the past 2 days, have had another case opened and several more messages from buyers. I have no idea how they can do this despite ebay supposedly fixing it and changing my passwords.

Phoned ebay again today and got shuffled from dep't. to dep't. and ended with someone who said they will open up an investigation and get back to me in 2-3 days.

I'm really worried that whoever is behind this could try and access my paypal account months down the road, like they do with credit cards. Am wondering if I should change my paypal account info. and my ebay username and account info. Or will the crooks still be able to get to me?

Did the crooks possibly take advantage of a momentary breach in our internet security? Our ISP has changed security software providers in the past month or so and this is the only possibility I can think of.

Grrr.... The internet is getting to be a more and more dangerous place all the time.

Likely what happened is the crooks didn't fraudulently sell 8 items from your acct....they probably sold 800. So the messages are just streaming in because your account is still linked to those sales.

Can you see the bad sales in your ebay account? Maybe those are just phishing attempts you are receiving about unreceived merch?

Yes, they showed up as actual sales and could be phishing attempts. Ebay deleted all the listings and refunded the buyers and the selling fees that ebay had charged me. The items no longer come up in ebay's system and can't find out anything more about the items or where all the buyers were supposedly from. But were the buyers ebay refunded the crooks or legit buyers? I did send a message back to one of the buyers and heard nothing back. Maybe replying to a message was not a good thing?

I would be nice to get an idea how they do this. Is it that they are hacking into ebay's system or is it at my end?
  • Our eBay account was hacked recently as well. It was blamed on the fact that I hadn't set up the (not-so-)new security questions. It's an old account we haven't used in ages. Nothing had happened and the eBay CSR said they were likely looking for PayPal information (which I didn't have).

Also, someone told me that this was happening more often to people with gMail accounts. Dunno if that's in any way true. If there's a chance your gMail has been hacked/guessed, change the password before having eBay send you a reset and/or password confirmation.

It probably goes without saying: Don't use the same password for mail that you use for eBay or paypal or credit cards or on-line banking.

I never open emails from them. But I always change passwords 1 time every year

Yup, never ever open up anything suspicious or from someone you don't know. EVER! I send them straight to junk and delete the domain and sender. Sometimes the sender's address and IP address can be figured out.

I've seen a few sophisticated scam emails lately related to ebay and paypal which look like the real thing. But when you stop and think about what you've received, ebay wouldn't do it the way they did.

  • I would go to paypal and set up 2-step authentication with your cell.
  • Yes, changed my paypal password so it *should* be okay, but am still nervous. Still don't know how they can still get into my ebay acc't despite new passwords, and pose as me being the seller of items that I never listed. Not sure what their exact intent is. Maybe they are just testing out what they can get away with? Maybe they are hoping some people will just go ahead and issue a refund via paypal and that gives them a way into your account?? The crooks are exploiting every trick they can think of.

If the crooks have accessed my account, does that mean they have my full name, address, etc. which can be used for identity theft? That is scary.

I linked my paypal and ebay account a year or two ago as requested (insisted?) by ebay. Just checked and it is still linked. Went to my account and there is a clicky to unlink the accounts but when I do, I can't anything on how to unlink. Will have to call ebay again. Good idea on removing the link.

  • The sad fact is that there is no way to prevent hacking so long as a system is connected to the Net. Even the NSA gets hacked. It's more a matter of when than if? Could very well be a vulnerability on Ebay side, maybe even a type of account spoofing, but I'd also check on your end to be safe.

Have you accessed this Ebay/PayPal account from the same computer since the accounts have been hacked? If that's the case, stop doing so until you have thoroughly scanned your systems to make sure malware is not preset, such a rootkit keyloggers which could be transmitting the account data back to hackers.

Also review how you are connecting to the Net? Make sure you are using the most secure methods.
  • I would certainly change your PayPal password and make it very tough to crack. Also, if you have your PayPal account linked to any bank accounts or credit cards, I'd break those links for a while.
  • PayPal is nolonger attached toebay they are now their own company so I sought that it will get hacked
