Automatic Satellite - Direct TV

We have Direct TV at home and would like to continue with the service when we are traveling the US and Canada. We have looked at both the King Quest automatic portable satellite and Winegard Carryout G-2. In our research they both look like they do the same type of thing. Just wondering which one we should get. We would like some feed back on them both.

  • I finally decided not to worry about the HD and local channels, since we normally camp outside our Directv local spot beam area. Bought the King Quest automatic satellite antenna. Got it working today. This automatic antenna is new and has only been out a couple of months. I found very few reviews about it. I'm going to post a thread about my experience to help the next guy researching this purchase. There is one minor issue which may be a bigger issue for some. I am overall happy with my decision.
  • Just a note, a Carryout G2 did not exist 5 years ago. This would be a standard Carryout which is a very good unit but substantially larger than the G2. That's not a bad thing, just a clarification.
  • I have used the Winegard Carryout G-2 for DirecTv SD signal for the past 5 years and just recently retired it to dust-catcher status on a shelf in the garage as we switched over to HD. The Carryout always performed flawlessly. Although I have never actually tried it, the G-2 is supposedly compatible with Dish as well by adjusting some dip switch settings under the dome. Drop me a PM if anyone would like a deal on a lovingly used Carryout.
  • Cindy... please send me a private msg... I have a spot for you.

Be aware that NONE of the DOME TYPE antennas will do DirecHDTV They can do DirecTV (and in fact very well) but not HD.. Many areas the "Local" network stations are HD only. I do not know about "Distant Network Service"
  • That is why I spent about $150 for a ground antenna and tripod. With 50 feet of RG6 coax I can always place my antenna in a clear spot.

Neither will allow you to get HD programming. The only automatic Direct dish that will get you HD is the Winegard Travler.

I understand this. One reason I am also considering Dish pay as you go to get HD. Wife says just forget HD, but I find that difficult. I want portable (not Travler) because many times when we travel with friends with roof mounts they are blocked by trees. There are a lot of big trees in the southeast. Thanks.

  • I am in the same position as you and would like to hear the good and bad of each. I am also considering the Winegard Anser semi -automatic if anyone has input. I have read that being a little larger the Anser has less rain fade out. Help us both out with some input guys. Yes, I have searched and read what's on here but more input is always better.

Thanks for asking the question Yellowschoolbus. Not trying to hijack thread just also wanting the same input since we have a big month long trip in a couple of weeks. Thanks for any help.
