Chromecast eating up my data?

Just looked at my Verizon data use and was surprised to see the amount of data I had used. I have 10gb per month and use my phone as a modem, while on the camping. Only spent a week out of the month camping but have used almost 7gb of data.

Getting to the point: I used very little data in the conventional method but did use Chromecast to show a couple of videos that were stored on my hard drive, never associating that with data use. Apparently, even though the phone/modem only acts as, what I would call, an intermediary between the computer and the Chromecast it must use data just like it would if I were watching Netflix. It appears that, maybe, it is using data both uploading the video and downloading to the tv.

In the past, I have used an HDMI cable to watch videos stored on my hard drive, but got the Chromecast to eliminate using cables. Apparently it was not that simple. Normally, thinking back, my data use would only have been only 1 to 2 gb for the period I was camping. Maybe someone here is familiar with this and can verify if this Chromecast is about to bust my data use.

  • Chromecast..is designed to use your "NETWORK" to mirror the pc screen to the TV, in this case your NETWORK was Verizon
So are you saying the OP used his phone as a wifi hot spot, logged his computer into it, then logged his Chromecast dongle into the same hotspot and, because the phone is not a router, the phone used the Verizon network as a router thereby consuming all that bandwidth to broadcast from the PC. Who'd'a thunk that could happen :?

  • No need to use your phone in this equation. If the Chromecast and PC are connected to the same WiFi hotspot (which is not your phone) you can cast directly from PC to CC.
  • Your trying to use the phone as a Wi-Fi router
IIRC..there was a discussion on this once before
This is not a good idea, you would be better off buying a router
To connect the pc to chromecast, not your phone
There are other Wi-Fi devices designed specifically for connecting the TV to the PC

The problem being the phone is not designed to be a stand alone Wi-Fi router...not using Verizon internet
  • Get the My Verizon Mobile App and you can see what is using how much.
  • You were casting from your computer to your TV? That should work even with your phone off. Even casting from your phone shouldn't be a data issue because casting requires you have wifi enabled.

I would look to see if you didn't accidentally start a stock ticker or something else that chews bandwidth and is running in the background on your phone.
