Disapointed with new Garmin

Did you do the initial update?

google "how to report errors to Garmin" for a number of direct links back to Garmin support. That's the only way they're going to know.

Well the 10 year old Maggelin tools us right to our destination, Westwind golf and RV resort.

I've lost Google maps a few times. It's usually when in the mountains or in areas where I'm driving quite a few miles and really don't need GPS. Since I'll just be following the same road for a long time it's not a big deal. I mostly use Google Maps to see where to head when i get closer to where I'm going.
My co-pilot (DW) keeps me on route.
With that being said I'm out on the west coast and roads are fewer and longer between spots. If I were in more congested areas I may want a GPS device other than my phone.

We have been using a Verison my-fi Jetpack with unlimited data so we have enjoyed wi-fi everywhere we go.
Tomorrow we will be rolling through Yuma again and I am going to run the new Garmin plus my old Magellan and see if it accurately takes me to that RV Park.

I have a question about using cell phones as a gps. Does the gps function work when there is no cell phone service?

Been using a Kyocera with NO cell service loaded with several GPS
apps for several years. Has been great BUT you have to remember to
pre-load the maps when you have wifi service.

I just spent some time in an area with no cell service for several
days and the Kyocera work perfectly.

I'm not a big fan of Garmin and there are better solutions.

My Garmin 50 drives me nuts. If I know a short cut it never, ever will remember it. Just a few weeks ago I put in an address that was on a service road. It sent me to a dead end. Drove miles to get out of that mess.

If you believe the Garmin is inaccurate, try TomTom. We have a Garmin 2797LMT which we keep current and it provides us with accurate information about 90% of the time, both using the Garmin and Cell Phone serve us well.

It depends.

If you have good internet service when you initiate the trip on the phone, it downloads the route and will work just fine.

If you don't have internet service when you initiate the trip, it doesn't work at all.

However, there is a work around. If you know you are going to need it in an area where you may not have internet service, download the area map ahead of time. That way, it will work just fine even when you don't have internet service. We recently spent 4 weeks driving around Europe. My cell phone worked flawlessly, but before I left one area, I downloaded the map of the next area we were going to.

It is easy to be disappointed by Garmin these days. I was hoping that when they bought Delorme, things would get better for both WRONG-O.

As said above, hunker down someplace that has good wifi and load Garmin Express and then be ready to wait a long time while it does the update. Then, when it screws up, now you can complain with good reason.
