Dish playmate antennas

We have Dish satellite at home with a VIP727 DVR receiver. In the past we've taken a typical Dish antenna with us and it's always been such a hassle to set up that we only use it when we are in one place for a long time. We're looking at the Dish Playmate unit but wonder if we can use it with our current receiver or lacking that is there a receiver that will work with the Playmate that can record programming? Any info/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks for your help.
  • A Dish VIP211K, Z, or Wally will record with an external hard drive attached and will work with a Playmaker. There's a one-time $40 fee to activate the hard drive/DVR feature. Instead of the Playmaker though, I recommend the Winegard Pathway X2 as a more versatile automatic dome dish. The X2 receives both the Dish eastern and western arc satellites for better aiming opportunities in heavily treed locations. The Playmaker is a western arc only dish. If you spend much time in the eastern US, you'll find that in some areas the local channels are only on the eastern arc sats.
  • Using my Playmate made me realize that leveling is very important. It seems the mechanical dynamic range is limited, so if it is level, it sets up much easier.
  • You will find that the Playmaker will lose signal en, due to the smaller dish. The Pathway X-2 is an 18" dish and will not lose the signal as often.
