HDMI Splitter do they work OK?

Retro fitting the RV with HD tv's, including SWM. Fighting only having one coax run to the rear from the front where my antenna and sat source is. I split to the rear feed to the outside TV as it was easy to run cable from the right rear corner thru the floor to the bay with the TV.

I will have a sat box in the bedroom that I want to feed the bedroomn tv and the outside TV, which I would like to do with a HDMI splitter.

Anyone use one? Do they work OK? I see thenm on Ebay for $5 or so.

Also going to run a 30' HDMI cable from it.
  • I set up my TT for satellite TV. We have two flat screens: one in the bedroom and the other in the livingroom. As long as you don't need separate programs on each TV, set up is fairly easy. You need 2 things:

    1. IR repeater (infrared repeater). These are available at a good price on Amazon. I bought this one. You can go to the manufacturer's website and for a few bucks get a 2nd receiver. I have a receiver in each room. The transmitters are attached to the ir inputs on my dvd and sat receiver. The receiver lives in a cabinet near the livingroom TV. No need for it to be exposed.

You should get an HDMI splitter (1 in - 2 out). This is also inexpensive. I got this one. It costs $20. I have the usual DVD, CD, Radio unit. I got a video splitter to split the composite video for each TV.

Now all remote controls work in both the bedroom and the livingroom and all entertainment is available to both sets. For satellite reception I have a Dish Tailgater. It's not bad, but the Dish programming prices are much higher than DirecTV. The tradeoff is that I can turn Dish off and not pay when I am not traveling.
  • You will still have to solve the problem of changing channels from the outside when watching outside. If your receiver supports RF remote your good to go, if not you'll need a repeater.
  • I had not heard of wireless HDMI. At $150 and spotty reviews, I think I'll run a cable.

I also realized I don't need a HDMI splitter; the sat box will be in the bedroom so I will connect the BR TV with component cables and run the outside TV with the 30 HDMI cable.
  • Another option you might consider is a wireless HDMI. I have a splitter in my garage I was going to use for my bedroom tv after installing my SK3005 but have since decided the wireless was the way to go. I have talked to some guys that have them and they are satisfied. I have not done it yet, however.

  • Just make sure they are the latest specs. When I did mine over a year ago it was 1.4 and you wanted to make sure they supported 3D, CEC and 2-way audio.

I use two, a manual one to switch between DVD and DirecTV and one automatic one to share with two TV's.

I think I've read you can run about 50' without issues. I can vouch for 47'.
  • I have found that they are extremely sensitive to lightning static and power surges. I have a 4 way and a 2 way in my home DirecTv setup and none have lasted a year. Not complaining but just be prepared to replace them sooner rather than later. I keep a spare of each.
I had tried the HDMI to Cat5 also and the HDMI seems more reliable.
  • Yes, I have a remote control 5:1 that I paid about $10 for from ebay

    Works great
  • Not a problem. I split the HDMI output of my Direct TV receiver in the front living room with a 1 in and 2 out HDMI splitter from Monoprice.com. I ran a 40 HDMI cable to the outside tv. Works great but, of course, you have to watch the same program. I used a swm splitter in my convenience center to supply the lnb with voltage from the power inserter and to feed signal to the rear tv which was prewired with a cable run.
