installing dish receivers

I recently purchased a 2006 fleetwood discovery that is (supposedly) satellite ready. I am ready to install the receivers, but am technology challenged. My unit has a video distribution center, which includes an input hookup for satellite dish.

I have been told by DISH sales reps that I need two separate cables from the dish itself, that I cannot simply plug the cable from the distribution center (which is currently hooked to the tv) ,into the receiver, then hook the receiver into the tv with the red, white and yellow cables.

ANy guidance is appreciated.
  • Thanks for all your replies. To make a long story short, I have purchased the 211 receiver from Dish Network'; the tech will be here to install and activate the beginning of next week.
  • The dome will require that you run only one coax from the dome to the receiver. This must be a direct run without any splitters or other connections. I don't believe that the LF/SF was capable of receiving the Dish 129 satellite so you may only receive 110 and 119 (no HD). You will also need to find out what service the previous owner used. If he was a DirecTV customer you are going to have to have a KHV dealer hook up their computer and special software to change it from locking onto DirecTV satellite to working with Dish.
If I am correct that that your antenna is too old to pick up the newer satellite, there might be a hardware update available from KVH but it's pretty expensive. You might be better off replacing the antenna.
Once you make the connection from the dome to the 411 receiver you will be able to either run an HDMI cable from the receiver directly to the back of the TV or connect the TV Out coax connection to your video control center (or both). For other TV in the coax to watch the one satellite channel you will need to at least connect to the video control center.
  • the antenna is TracVision LF/SF; the receiver is Dish 411.
  • Be sure you don't confuse the responses here. You CAN run the coax OUTPUT from the receiver to the video control center so you can watch where ever is on that receiver on any TV in the coach.
However, you CANNOT run the coax INPUT (coax from the antenna) through the video control center in any manner. It (they) need to run directly from the antenna to the receiver.
You only need 2 coax cables from an antenna if you plan to use a DVR or dual tuner box. Depending upon the type of antenna you plan to use, however, this might not work.
Can you tell us more about the antenna you will be using and what kind of receiver you are planning to install?
  • My 2004 Bounder has the distribution system and the satellite goes to the input in the back of the distribution box marked sat. The receiver is in line between output to TV1 which is the front TV. We can also add a receiver to the back TV if we want to but the DW likes it on antenna so she can watch local programs.
  • OK, it has been here over and over, satellite connects directly to satellite receiver, period. output from receiver goes to everything else. If in doube, get a satellite person to hook everything up right.
  • I believe that DISH sales rep is right. I first tried connecting through the distribution center, but got nothing but noise out of the receiver. I got it to work by going directly from dish to receiver.

So here's what I did: (1): Connect cable from dish to satellite input on the outside of RV. (2) On the distribution box, find cable from satellite input. (3) Unplug that cable from distribution box. Using
short piece of extension coax cable, run the cable that you found in 2 to the DISH receiver.
    (4) On distribution box, find cable to TV. Unplug that cable. (5) Connect cable 4 to TV. (May be necessary to use another extension coax.)

Now that TV is disconnected from distribution box, I have to run other devices (blue ray, VHS) directly to one of the TV inputs. A little inconvenient maybe, but not big deal to me.
