Is there such a thing as a Win8 Comp? Satisfaction Obtained

I just took a Toshiba Satellite laptop into Best Buy to have a new licensed OEM copy of Win7 into BB to have Win8 removed and Win7 installed. They determined that the HDD was bad and that was why we could never get it to work. It is just out of the warrantee by two weeks. So they installed a new HDD and they say that they cannot do a clean install of WIN7 because it is a Win8 computer.

The tech said he can't change the Bios or disable the UEFI or enable Legacy Boot.

I don't understand how that can be.

Could I have a dual boot set up where either one can boot up?

Any help at all would be nice. I think I'm being screwed over. Computer, HDD and all software including the OEM win7 disc came from them for this purpose.

TIA
  • Which Toshiba Satellite? Some models are apparently BIOS locked into using only GPT for Windows 8. So don't have the option for legacy boot or CMS needed for WIN 7.

You need to find and flash an updated BIOS that has the capability to legacy boot. Maybe from Toshiba?
  • Thank you 1775, that's what I thought. Then I learned that there are things they have to do to the BIOS which includes reinstalling the drivers.

    Any more ideas?
  • If you have an Win 7 OEM full install disk, just let them install Win 8. When you get the laptop back, format the hdd and do a clean install of Win 7. The only potential problem might be any specific drivers this laptop needs that are not in Windows 7 - but if they took your laptop in to start for the purpose of doing a Win 7 install and then found a hdd problem and are now telling you that they can't do a Win 7 install on it, it sounds to me like they are screwing you around. I am not sure why they won't do this for you unless they are being told by Microsoft not to but - that is why they took the laptop in for service in the first place!
