Kaspersky Internet Security 2013????

My older laptop with Symantec's Norton 360 Internet security software crashed, it's dead.

So, I bought a new laptop. It comes with a one year subscription to Kaspersky Internet Security 2013.

I've never heard about this software. Anyone familiar with it? How does it compare to Norton 360 for effective Internet security?
  • I don't know of anyone knowledgeable with present day net threats that would advice not using some type of protectioin, unless you're running a type of isolated browser environment, such as a sandbox. Especially considering rootkit and keylogging malware are exceedingly difficult to detect, even by many mainstream AV protection software, could be doing its damage without any noticeable effect.
  • I use ESET NOD32 along with Malwarebytes free version.
  • I have used "nothing" for years. I notice no difference.
  • Since the early 90s, I've used the big boy's antivirus: Norton, McAfee, Kaspersky, etc. over the years at a subscription cost, of course. Then, the "Security Suites" came out trying to be everything to everybody at even higher costs. Each company, in their effort to be #1, seems to rise and fall in the rankings every year with regard to effectiveness and performance.

I grew tired of the cost of being the guinea pig and went back to the free stand-alones; antivirus and firewall with auto updates and malware, spyware, and registry cleaner. Takes a little more work on my part as some of the freeware isn't automatically updated as in their "Pro" versions. But, they are excellent programs as long as I maintain a reasonable update and scan schedule. I've had no problems or costs for years.
  • I used it but ran into problems when my hard drive went toes up and their proprietary software thought I was trying to copy - switched to one of the free versions available on-line - seems to work fine. For what it's worth I find that malware protection (opposed to virus) is a bigger deal these days and that usually requires another software package like malwarbytes etc.
  • They all go in cycles. One six-month period, one AV program is tops. Next cycle, another. The malware guys are good at finding ways around various programs.

So far, what I've been doing is running my Web browser in a virtual machine (Hyper-V is available on Windows 8, and does a decent job.) This limits what damage malicious software can do since when (not if) the VM gets nailed, all it takes is a rollback to a previous snapshot, and the problem is over.
  • Kaspersky has traditionally been very highly rated by independent security testing groups. Top for protection by AV-Test.org.

X2; I've been using it exclusively for nearly 10 years.

I used to subscribe to all of the big store named software like NORTON etc... Finally just started using the free ones... haven't noticed any difference security wise...

I am using AVG Antivirus and Advanced SystemCare
