Library eBooks and AudioBooks - Overdrive ???

I use the Clip and it's super easy to transfer from Overdrive to the Clip. Just select the book at the library website, when you Save it Overdrive will open and ask if you want to download it and where. Specify where, then after it's downloaded plug in your Clip and use the "Transfer" button and follow the directions. Kind of convoluted, but not really difficult. After you've done it a couple times, it's a non-issue.

I put all my books in the Audiobooks folder in my Clip, in a folder of the book. You can do than when you transfer them to the Clip. That keeps you from having a ton of MP3's that you have to sort through to get to the one you want to listen to.

I use Overdrive to read hundreds of books via my local public library. I sign in with my local library card to pick and check out my books, then they can be downloaded to any or all my devices, which include a smartphone, a NOOK HD+, my desktop computer, or my laptop. Checkouts expire automatically after three weeks. It works just like going to the public library in person, and checking out books from their shelves. Even better, as they get no overdue fines, and return automatically. I can access the library to get new books from anywhere we have internet access. And, it is free!

Best thing is to go to your local library, make sure your card is current, and have them show you how to do it. Instructions and helppages are a bit vague, but its really easy!

Me too. If you want e-books you will need an appointment to open them, on a PC or tablet. Either a Kindle app, or Adobe Digital Editions. Works great!

Right now, I have 6 books checked out, already read 3 of them, and about 10 more on hold. And haven't been to the physical library in over a year. Don't do audio books, not driving that much anymore, and if I try to sit and listen to them, I go to sleep.

Thanks for your input. I got OverDrive to work. My library card had expired a few weeks ago so I had to get a new card. That was my problem. Now the book series I was wanting to read #5 of 6 is only available by HOOPLA and I find out that hoopla is a streaming ONLY service. I tried to get an inter-library loan, but they do not loan ebooks or audio books.

I use Overdrive with WV Reads. I read on my wifi-only 14" HP Chromebook, which is so light and sturdy that I take it everywhere. Once I virtually open the book, I can read it offline even without wifi as long as I don't turn the machine off - I just close the lid. There is no hard drive in the Chromebook, so it must cache it.

There a some downsides to library versus buying with not all of a series available as TenOC mentioned. But, I have also been able to discover some wonderful new-to-me series, too.

Currently reading the Alan Bradley Flavia de Luce series and just finished the new Leaphorn and Chee books by Tony Hillerman's daughter - none of the books were on my radar as I have had little time to keep up with new releases.

You can sign up with several libraries -- each one has a slightly different selection on Overdrive. I get most of my Kindle books that way.

What do you mean 'sign up with several libraries' ??

I fulltime and have been using Overdrive for about 3 years. My biggest problem was that the county library I'm now in (associated full timers address) is relatively small hence not a large selection of books to choose from. And they also would only issue cards if you came in person in order to verify you live in that county. Which is why I asked my question above. I'd like to know how to get free library cards from multiple public libraries.

My solution was to buy a membership from a large library - specifically Orange County (Florida) Library. Cost is $200/year. I consider that a minor cost based on the number of books I read in a year.

I long for the day that we have state-wide or (gasp !) a country-wide ebook lending library. Can you imagine - No more complaints about not being able to download all but one of a series of books ?
