Microsoft update help

Ok, I goofed. I was getting a lot of updates for Microsoft Suite 7 that I don't have on my computer that I have Windows 7 on. I went (somewhere) and clicked not to receive Microsoft updates only Windows updates. Now it searches & searches for updates but never finds any. I did a system restore back to 2/18/16 as the only other restore date it showed was Nov 2015 & I got a message about that was too far back to choose another date. The only other choice was the 2/18 date. How do I find where I made this change & fix it?
  • MS is still releasing updates to XP and will continue thru 2019. Win 7 will continue as well.

To the OP's original question, under Windows Updates, there is a link to "Get updates for other Microsoft products." Click on Find out more.

When I click, I get a generic browser window with instructions to find Windows Update in Control Panel. That is because we don't allow other updates by policy where I work. However, TechNet says that it should allow you to go to Microsoft Updates so you can install the control to allow other MS products to be included.

Or, if you aren't getting those updates, just leave it off (which it should be by default.) I think that once you enable it, you can't go back.

I think that is what I did as I don't see that choice any longer. I get the same generic browser window too. Am I correct in thinking that if & when Wondows puts out an update for win 7, I'll be able to get those? Right now when, as I said in my original post, it just searches & searches & never stops. Or at least it hasn't until I give up & shut it down.

Had this problem with both win 7 and 8.1 when updates had been turned off all summer. Don't need giga bytes of up dates on the hotspot. Once I turned updates back on when we got home just told it to search and walked away for several hours. Once it found all the updates and they applied it went back to it's normal short search times.

Microsoft is still releasing patches for Windows 7, so yes you should still get them from time to time. They are usually released monthly.

Be very careful with updates. I have found that some had hurt the operation of my computer and I had to either restore or delete the update if I could. Before you install an update, see what it's purpose is. Initiate a Restore point before you make any computer changes, this way you have it just in case. I was thinking of going to Windows 10 until I found that MS will do only automatic updates and be able to snoop on your system at will. I have now also deleted Skype and covered my camera even with Windows 7 just in case.

In win 10 go to settings; update and security and under there you can control windows updates.

What operating system do you have? Windows 7 does not have support as of Jan 13 2016 http://www.pcworld.com/article/2462643/what-happens-when-microsoft-ends-windows-7-mainstream-support-next-year.html
Actually, that isn't entirely accurate. Windows 7 will be supported with patches into 2020, Microsoft just won't be providing service packs or releases of bundled patches for Win 7.

Windows 7 is still the mainstay of corporate America. Windows 8.x and 10 are just starting to come into the corporate world. If Microsoft stopped supporting Windows 7 they would have a revolt on their hands from their corporate buyers. In effect, they would be biting the hand that feeds them.
