new PC for rig

Hi there everyone,

DW and I full time in our rig and have been doing so for 5 years now. We have a computer desk with a small profile (12x4x14) tower computer setup. I do A LOT of image and video editing for a dog rescue that the wife and I volunteer for. We like having a full keyboard and monitor. We are looking for suggestions on a replacement box for our current setup. Are there any recommendations for what brand and model to look for? We don't need a lot of horse power, but I do need to be able to have 2 TB of fast random access storage. The cloud or external USB drives wont cut it.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Eric and Carol Anderson.
  • I have the small 6- core Mac Pro with LaCie 1TB Little Big Disk Thunderbolt-2 Solid State Drive and HGST 4TB Touro Deskpro Hard Drive 7200 RPM USB 3.0 ext. I use 4K monitors for working with my 4K home videos using Final Cut Pro X . The Mac Pro is the first desktop I ever used that had no fan noise.

I was setup pretty good using my OLDER DEL M90 LAPTOP WORKSTATION with a DELL DOCKING station setup. I was running dual 24-inch monitors, ext keyboard and special equipment supporting my HAM RADIO and MARS RADIO comms. I am also very interested in AUTOCAD DRAWINGS and such in the electronic design world.

We are also doing aot of photos.

I was never able to upgrade my older WINDOWS XP-plus operating system to WIN 7 or WIN 8 so have sort of gone on hold now saving up to purchase a WIN 8 DELL Workstation series LAPTOP using the DELL DOCKING STATION concept.

Having the LAPTOP was the best solution for us as we can just grab the LAPTOP from the house and plug-it into the RV setup and continue on.

We lived out of mulitple portable USB HARD DRIVES however for storage of things...

The big downside for us was getting high speed internet connections when we needed it. Our solution was the VERIZON MIFI units but it does not support anything like you are asking for...

I notice HUGHES SATELLITE is now advertising high speed MOBILE internet using satellite. My past experience doing this in my working years was not good. Maybe HUGHES is on to something now -

    good luck...

  • You didn't specify what your budget is and whether or not the small profile is an absolute necessity.

I've owned a few Dells and have never had problems with them. This one would do you well but doesn't come in a small form factor: Dell XPS 8700

You might consider a computer with a smallish (120GB) ssd for the OS and programs (an ssd is much faster than a hdd so it would boot fastr and load programs quicker) with a 2nd internal 2TB hdd for a data only drive.
